An overlooked fantasy trilogy your child should read

The Exodus trilogy by Julie Bertagna is one of the most unique fantasy utopian trilogies I ever read. Nothing quite like this one, the world, the atmosphere of this series are so different than any other fantasy book you find out there. I haven’t read something similar to this one, before or after, something so unique about it, which you can only fully understand if you read it yourself. Besides, I think the most overlooked fantasy novel, without those awful themes and cliches you find in the most popular ones.

It always makes me sad if a good book is overlooked or a writer didn’t get enough created for his work, this book is one of them and I think it is worth talking about, worth reading it and discovering a new and unique world. In my editions there is the perfect quote to describe this book: ‘’A miracle of a novel…a book you will remember for the rest of your life’’. It is about the first book, but you can easily say this about the whole trilogy. This world, the feelings stay with you, many years after you read it, I guess we safely say all of your life.

We can refer back with this book to my previous article about history, because I was in school when I read the first book in the trilogy and the first time in my life made me question what is written in history books and started my journey of critical thinking (without knowing at that time). It was a spark, it didn’t seem important, but it was the first step of a journey.

The story sets in a time when all the ice melted and barely left any dry land on Earth where people can live. We start with a small island, a small community who are in the danger to washed away by the ocean, that’s where our protagonist starts her journey to the unknown and unexpected, learning responsibility, dealing with failures and blame in certain point by others.

To tie back to the previous paragraph and my article before this one, there some points and mention in the book about history where people who love in these ‘’sky city(s)’’ they told they saved all people from Earth and they are the only surviving people, they don’t know nothing about the outside world and there are many people out there at the city gates desperate to get in. They believe what they are taught in schools, completely unaware about anything else outside of their world. There is nothing as it seems, I think this and how it is represented, described, made me question what I read in history books or what I hear on the TV, read in the news, all of that. It was an eye opening for me, which started my journey to know and learn more.

The tech is really great in this book, nothing overly complicated, don’t have to be, to be interesting to the reader.

The ending of the whole trilogy and it’s an open ending, makes you feel you wanted more, not necessarily a happy ending for me. My only problem with the whole trilogy is the ending, it makes me feel I want a fourth book, I want to know more about it, about the characters, and just want to stay in this world just a little bit more. Maybe, I am just disappointed, because it didn’t end how I expected, but I think this open ending gives the reader an opportunity to think about the story further.

I don’t want to give away too much about the book, I want to read and experience yourself, my article doesn’t give back the world and the experience firsthand by reading it.

I am not that type of person who can re-read books, it can happen, but not often. I am not sure I read this one again. Definitely, not in this category for me, mainly because you don’t have to read again and again to remember this book, it’s one of a kind.

You can read it as an adult, and take away something from it, learn something from it. I think these are the best types of books which adults and children both enjoy, perhaps together. Open a discussion, spark a thought and start a journey, these are the essentials of a great book. Julie Bertagna created an amazing world, which I highly and wholeheartedly recommended for you or your children.
