Vana loved her birds. She reveled in their beauty, the chirping sounds they made in the birdcage, and the effortless freedom displayed each time they spread their wings and flew.
She even enjoyed cleaning the cage, leaving the door open while she scraped away the mixture of seed shells and droppings. She often wondered why the birds never flew out of the cage.
That was until she met Greg.
Initially charming and smart, he spoke of a future filled with happiness. But after they married, the man she knew slowly disappeared.
He began criticizing her appearance, monitoring her every move, and forcing her to sever ties with family and friends. “I’m all that you need,” he would constantly repeat.
He would relentlessly berate her if she ever tried to express her feelings, shouting, “You’re too sensitive,” and “No one else would put up with you.”
Greg especially loathed the birds, yelling at them to be quiet and demanding that she get rid of the “annoying” creatures.
But Vana refused, as the birds became her one act of defiance. She would sit for hours and watch them soar within their small, wire world. The more she watched, the more she began to understand why the birds never escaped when the cage door was open.
The birds remained because the cage had grown comfortable and known, despite being a prison. It was then that Vana understood her own life had become a reflection of the birds she kept.
That afternoon, Vana packed a suitcase and walked out the front door. When Greg returned, he found deafening silence and a wedding ring on the table, along with an open, empty birdcage.
Outside, beyond the window, birds flew free across the fading sky. Only then did Greg realize that Vana had finally joined them.
