Guide Their Emotions, Don’t Silence Them

Dr. Vaibhav Gode, MD, child Specialist

Life has become faster than ever. Work responsibilities, household tasks, financial pressures, long commutes, and even screens take up most of our attention. Many parents tell themselves:

· “I’m doing all this for my children.”

· “Once things settle down, I’ll spend more time with them.”

But while we are busy building a better future for them, their present is passing by. Childhood doesn’t wait. Kids may not remember the expensive toys or school fees we worked so hard for — but they always remember whether they felt loved, valued, and understood.

· Children don’t need perfect parents.

· Children don’t need hours of entertainment.

· Children need just a few minutes of our undivided attention, every day.

Ø Why children need connection, not correction, when feelings run high

Children feel everything deeply — anger when they’re misunderstood, fear when they feel unsafe, jealousy when they feel left out, and huge excitement over small joys. These big feelings can be overwhelming inside a small heart and growing mind.

But here’s the challenge: They are still learning how to understand and express those emotions. So when a child cries loudly, throws a tantrum, shouts, or refuses to listen… they are not “being bad”. They are communicating something big and important

· “I need help with this emotion.”

· “I don’t know how to handle what I’m feeling.”

· “Please understand me.”

When we shout, punish, or dismiss their feelings, they don’t learn emotional control — they learn how to hide.

Ø What Happens When We Silence Emotions

Many of us grew up hearing:

· “Stop crying right now!”

· “Don’t talk back.”

· “Why are you so angry for no reason?”

· “You’re too sensitive.”

These statements might stop the crying in that moment, but they create silent struggles inside:

Shame: “My feelings are wrong.” Fear: “I’m not safe to express myself.” Withdrawl: “Nobody will understand me anyway.”

Over time, children who are repeatedly silenced may:

· Hide their feelings

· Show less trust in parents

· Become anxious or aggressive

· Develop low confidence

· Struggle with emotional control later in life

We end up raising children who behave well in front of us but break down inside themselves.

Ø Name the Feeling to Tame the Feeling

Children cannot process what they cannot name.

So help them put feelings into words:

· “You look disappointed that your picture didn’t turn out the way you wanted.”

· “You felt jealous when I praised your sister.”

· “That loud noise really scared you.”

Naming emotions teaches children:

· “All feelings are acceptable.”

· “I can talk about what’s happening inside me.”

· “Feelings can be handled safely.”

Ø A Child’s Behaviour Is a Clue

Instead of asking, “Why is this child acting like this?”

Ask: “What is this behavior telling me?”

Examples:

· A clingy child may be feeling insecure.

· A shouting child may feel unheard.

· A “stubborn” child may feel powerless.

· A child who lies may be scared of punishment.

· A child who hits may lack words to express anger.

Every behaviour is communication. Our job is to decode it.

Ø Be the Calm They Need

Children copy what they see.

If we yell, they yell back. If we judge, they become defensive. If we remain calm… they learn calmness.

It’s not easy — but our patience teaches them emotional control.

Try modeling:

· Taking a deep breath

· Speaking slowly during conflict

· Saying, “I need a moment to calm down.”

· Your reaction becomes their inner voice.

Ø Kindness With Boundaries

Guiding emotions does not mean letting harmful behaviour go unchecked.

You can say:

· “You can be angry, but you cannot hurt people.

· “We don’t throw things. Let’s stomp feet or squeeze a pillow to let out the anger.”

· “It’s okay to be upset. When you’re ready, I will listen.”

This teaches:

· Emotions are allowed

· Harmful actions are not

This is healthy discipline — done through connection, not fear.

Ø The Positive Results Over Time

Children who feel understood:

· Build confidence

· Manage anger better

· Trust their parents

· Develop empathy

· Perform better in school

· Become emotionally resilient adults

We are not just teaching behaviour —

we are shaping the future mental health of our children.

Ø Everyday Moments to Practice Emotional Guidance

· During homework frustration

· When a toy breaks

· When they lose a game

· When a sibling gets more attention

· Before bed when feelings increase

· In the morning rush when stress rises

These daily struggles become daily opportunities to build emotional strength.

Ø A Small Practice You Can Start Today

Ask your child every night:

· “What was the best part of your day?”

· “Was there a moment you felt sad or angry?”

Listen without judgement. Those few minutes build a lifetime of trust.

Ø A Parenting Promise

Let’s promise our children:

· “Your feelings matter.”

· “You are allowed to feel everything.”

· “You can always talk to me.”

· “I will guide you — not scare you.”

Because behind every behaviour is a child asking:

“Do you still love me when I’m struggling?” Yes. Always yes.

Ø Final Thoughts

You don’t need to have all the answers. You just need to be present, patient, and kind.

· Support their emotions

· Teach better behaviours

· Build connection over correction

· Lead with love, not fear

Children who are emotionally guided become adults who can handle life with maturity and confidence.

Let’s raise a generation who knows: Feelings are not weaknesses — they are signs of being human.
