I carried the question for years.
What is this Kingdom Jesus keeps talking about?
Not weeks. Years. The kind of years where you keep seeking because something inside won’t let you stop — even when nothing is breaking through. Even when the silence feels less like peace and more like absence.
The guilt-based gospel had trained me well — to engage Jesus through the mind, through doctrine, through intellectual effort. That training ran deep. It was all I knew. And without realizing it, the very instrument I had been given to seek God with was the one quietly standing between me and what I was longing for.
I was seeking with the wrong instrument — my mind, my intellect. I just didn’t know it yet.
This essay is about what happened when I finally found the right one. And where it led.
Last week I wrote about the moment I realized Jesus was never speaking to my mind — he was always speaking to the heart. That realization opened a door. This essay is about what I found on the other side of that door — and the silence Jesus kept pointing to all along.
Years of Not Knowing
For a long time — longer than I like to admit — I carried the unanswered question quietly. What is the Kingdom of God? Where is it? How do I experience it?
I prayed. I fasted. I studied Scripture. I read biblical scholars and religious thinkers across multiple traditions. All of it sincere. All of it faithful.
And still — nothing broke through.
Looking back I understand why. Religion had placed enormous emphasis on the mind — on understanding, on doctrine, on intellectual engagement with God’s word. That emphasis was deeply rooted in me. The guilt-based gospel I had inherited wasn’t just a theological framework. It was a way of processing everything — including the search for the Kingdom Jesus preached.
The mind kept reaching for something the mind was never designed to grasp.
I kept asking: How does the heart actually hear? How do I listen with the heart? How do I go within?
No answer came in words. But something was shifting beneath the surface — slowly, quietly, the way seasons change before you notice them.
A Glimpse Before the Breakthrough
Something did shift — quietly, before the full breakthrough arrived.
I became aware, gradually and almost without noticing, that silence was where communion with God happened. Not in the striving or the studying. In the silence. A still, wordless place I kept finding myself drawn toward without fully understanding why.
But I hadn’t yet connected that silence to the Kingdom Jesus preached. That connection was still coming.
I carried both threads — the question about the Kingdom and the growing awareness of silence — separately, for months. Neither had yet revealed its relationship to the other.
When Two Streams Converged
Then something began to shift more noticeably.
I came across the work of the *HeartMath Institute *— researchers exploring the relationship between the heart, the brain and human perception. What they were finding confirmed quietly what I had already begun to sense: the heart carries its own intelligence. It processes. It perceives. It knows — independently of the thinking mind.
Around the same time, my understanding of the Aramaic world Jesus lived and spoke in was deepening. In that world — so different from the Western intellectual framework religion handed me — the heart wasn’t a metaphor. It was the center of perception. The place where knowing happened. The place where God was recognized.
These two streams — the science of the heart and the Aramaic way of seeing — had been running quietly in the background for months. I hadn’t yet seen where they were leading.
Then one ordinary day they converged.
The Moment the Sun Broke Through
Out of nowhere — unbidden, unexpected, in the middle of an unremarkable moment — a thought burst through like brilliant sun through a cloudy sky:
If we’re truly tracking with Jesus, we’ve missed something essential. Jesus spoke to the heart.
Something broke open.
Years of circling the same questions — what is this Kingdom, where is it, how do I get there — stopped. Not gradually. Abruptly. As if something that had been held tightly for a very long time suddenly, quietly released.
I found myself smiling from within. Not from the outside. From somewhere deep and still and certain.
And before I could form another thought — before my mind could rush in to analyze what had just happened — a second awareness rose. Not arrived from outside but surfaced from within. Quiet. Unmistakable:
I don’t have to get to the Kingdom. The Kingdom of God is already within.
I sat very still.
I didn’t pray. I didn’t reach for words. I didn’t try to hold onto what was happening or understand it. I simply — breathed. And in that breathing, in that stillness, something filled the space where all the striving had been.
There. It’s there. It’s here. Here, in the silence.
No effort. No prayer needed. No praises. Nothing.
Just be.
This Is the New Story
I want to name this moment clearly — because it is easy to read past it without feeling its full weight.
This is the new story.
Not the one the guilt-based gospel tells — the one that begins with what’s wrong with you, that keeps you striving and reaching and never quite arriving.
But the one Jesus was always pointing toward. The one that begins not in the mind but in the heart. Not in reaching but in returning. Not in earning but in remembering.
The Kingdom of God is not a place to get to. It is a Presence already within — waiting, as it turned out, with extraordinary patience.
And the doorway into it is not doctrine. Not intellectual effort. Not moral achievement.
It is silence. Stillness. The simple, unhurried act of breathing — consciously, intentionally, returning again and again to the present moment.
This is what Jesus was pointing to all along.

What I Wrote That Evening
Just before bed that evening I typed this note to myself:
The Stillness Within
In quietness and rest. In repose and stillness. In repose and receptivity. In repose and clarity.
A beautiful place as I sense this rest — this repose. It’s either descending on me today or emerging out of me and spreading through me.
Stillness and rest — no thoughts interrupting. Just being present with Presence. Presence is there silently. Been waiting for me patiently for some time now.
Breathing and resting. Deep breath in and longer exhale.
Just be…. just being there. This is all I am aware of right now. Just being here in silence and breathing in and out, taking in the silence. Taking in the sensation of God. Remaining still to take it all in. Just breathing and allowing this lovely sensation to penetrate my being. It is allowing me to just be. Working within — gently drawing me into a new place, a fresh place, a new sense of being.
Indescribable.
This is a sweet, quiet place. Emotionally, mentally, spiritually and physically uplifting and nourishing.
Becoming simple from the inside. Feeling calmness within. It feels like I am looking down from a mountain or a high place — just observing life in the physical realm, but not strongly. It’s not distracting me — it’s a casual noticing. No angst. No concern. No judgment.
Just be.
I keep hearing this roll over me and through me — “just be.” Just be. Rest in me.
Be still and know. Feel. You can only feel when you are still. I am being still — enjoying, basking in it.
Just be. Just be still with God — not just before God, but with God. I can feel myself flowing into him, but he was always there.
Jesus recognized God in the stillness and embraced him as Father. Not as the distant God that I was taught.
Just be… Be silent… Rest.
In stillness and rest is your trust — with the feeling of a deep inner peace that feels soft, comfortable and safe inside. Everything around me right now is exceedingly good. I am at peace. Be still. Breathe and just be.
The Doorway Was Always There
The heart hears in the silence.
Not in the striving. Not in the analyzing. Not in the reaching toward something just out of range. In the silence. In the stillness. In the conscious, unhurried return to the present moment — breath by breath.
This is the silence Jesus kept pointing to all along. Not a technique to master. Not a spiritual achievement to earn. Not a destination requiring years of preparation.
Simply — a returning. A remembering. A coming home to what was always already present.
The silence was always the doorway. And it’s still open.
The Practice
If something stirred a quiet longing — or confirmed something you’ve already been sensing — here is the practice that began to open this for me.
It’s simple. Almost embarrassingly so. But simple is not the same as easy. The mind will resist. You will drift. That’s not failure — that’s the practice. Every return is a small act of coming home.
Begin here:
- Find a quiet place and close your eyes. If you’re in public, simply fix your gaze softly on one spot.
- Relax your shoulders. Take a few natural breaths before you begin.
- Inhale slowly and deeply. Hold for a count of five. Exhale slowly and completely — emptying out entirely. Pause before the next inhale.
- When your mind wanders — and it will — simply notice without judgment and return gently to the breath. No frustration. No self-criticism. Just — return.
Do this for two minutes. Then five. Let it grow at its own pace.
In that breathing — in that intentional stillness — the heart begins to hear. And what it hears has always been there, quietly waiting beneath everything you’ve been carrying.
The Kingdom of God is within you. Jesus said so. The silence confirms it.

If something in this stirred a question or a recognition — I’d love to hear it in the comments.
