The owl was perched on my towel rack when I stumbled into the bathroom before sunrise.

“You’ve arrived,” he said gravely.

“I live here.”

“Excellent. Then you’ll appreciate today’s lesson.”

He puffed out his feathers.

“Never whistle underwater. The fish will think you’re criticizing their singing.”

I stared.

“That’s ridiculous.”

“So is gravity,” he replied. “We’ve simply become accustomed to it.”

Before I could answer, he flew out the open window.

I spent the rest of the morning wondering why fish had suddenly become a perfectly reasonable thing to worry about.

The toothbrush refused to comment. Therefore, I believed him.
