SriLankan airlines bold decision to go with the Airbus A330.

Since the start of 2025, SriLankan Airlines have ordered several new Airbus A330's.

The A330’s operate from Sri Lanka to Australia and limited other coutries.

Now, the A330 has a excellent range, roughly between 13000 and 15000 kilometers.

Most aircrafts are well capable of going this distance such as the Boeing 787, Boeing 777X, and the Airbus A350.

SriLankan airlines bought the A330 specifically for routes such as Colombo (CMB) to Melbourne (MEL), CMB to Sydney (SYD) , and CMB to London Heathrow (LHR).

The A330 is known for being a smooth sailing aircraft.

But there is one question.

Why did SriLankan Airlines go with the A330, instead of the 787, 777, or A350?

The A330’s price ranges from $200 million to $260 million.

The other airliners such as A350, B787, and B777 range from roughly $268 million to $390 million.

Now you might be questioning, why did SriLankan Airlines buy the A330 instead of newer and safer models such as the A350 and B787.

Well here’s the thing…

1. SriLankan airlines had a limited budget, in which the A330 fitted and was able to be bought several times.
2. The A330 requires low maintenance and is very fuel efficient.

3. Sri Lanka is roughly in the middle of earth, roughly making flights to most destinations 6–14 hours.

4. Not many passengers go on the daily flights, as it is mainly a tourist destination and not a business destination.

But here’s why it would be more efficient for SriLankan Airlines to use the B787, A350, or B777 instead of the A330.

1. The aircrafts provide a much larger range including from CMB to LAX (Los Angeles).

2. The airliners provide much larger passenger capacity incase of holiday rushes holding from 350+ passengers.

3. The airliners have a much higher saftey bar unlike the A330.

4. These aircrafts provide much larger and better passenger comfort.
