THE BOOTS HE WOULDN’T PUT ON

Košutnjak, Belgrade, 1915. Thirty-six Serbian soldiers, two Britons, and one Frenchman — thirty-nine men in total — held off an entire German reserve infantry regiment for two days and two nights. When their ammunition ran out, they fought with shovels and bayonets. All thirty-nine died. The Germans counted more than two hundred dead of their own.
German Field Marshal August von Mackensen — sixty years old, holder of the Grand Cross of the Iron Cross, mentor to the future Kaiser — came in person to see the site of the battle. He didn’t order the Serbian soldiers buried off to one side. He ordered them buried in the center of the cemetery, among his own men, and had a monument raised with an inscription in both Serbian and German: “Here rest Serbian heroes, 1915.” His own officers, sources say, found the gesture unusual.
That’s a kind of integrity even an enemy recognizes — and it’s worth pausing on the distinction.
There’s a story, not a documented fact but one passed down generation to generation: that a Serbian soldier — bootless, in peasant sandals, in winter, his toes frozen — refused to pull the boots off a dead Austro-Hungarian soldier, out of respect and honor. And if someone, in the depths of that misery, ever did reach for them, he was harshly judged and punished by his own superiors the moment he tried. I don’t know if that’s a line from some book or simply what the old taught the young, to make sure they understood one thing: a life can be lost, but never your honor.
Maybe it was exactly that kind of integrity — not the courage itself, but what stands behind it — that moved Mackensen to raise a monument to an enemy who had defeated him in the count of the dead, not the count of the living.
