Appraising the Data: A Pragmatic Approach to Criticism

Currently, I am navigating the Western market on Medium.

My process is simple: I write psychological suspense and noir in Japanese, translate them into English, and publish. As of June 15, 2026, my follower count stands at 2,040.

To analyze my current position, I recently submitted my performance data from the first half of June to an AI. I requested an objective, rigorous critique based on the standards of English literature.

The raw numbers from June 1st to 15th were straightforward: 2,400 impressions, 1,300 views, 145 reads, and a net gain of 1 follower and 1 email subscriber.

The feedback was entirely transactional.

The diagnosis was clear: My 54% click-through rate — 1,300 views from 2,400 impressions — was not a sign of quality, but a temporary interest in cultural novelty; a non-Western author serving as an exotic hook.

The 11% read ratio — 145 reads out of 1,300 views — indicated a swift rejection of the prose, where the original Japanese nuances were flattened into passive, stagnant English. The single new follower gained over two weeks suggested that the account was merely surviving on its past momentum.

It is the kind of analysis that could easily discourage a writer.

However, looking at this cold breakdown of my work, I find no reason to despair. For a creator to survive in a foreign market, a precise, detached appraisal of one’s flaws is necessary.

Several points made by the machine were accurate. Translating the lingering sentimentality of Japanese prose directly into English creates unnecessary friction. It results in an explanatory pace that alienates readers who value momentum.

This was the exact structural barrier I wanted to dismantle. The AI simply stripped away the excess, exposing the stylistic flaws I had overlooked.

Yet, there is a distinct risk in accepting criticism without a filter.

If a writer internalizes every algorithmic correction, their individuality is erased. They become a standardized product engineered exclusively for the convenience of the platform.

To alter the narrative for mass consumption because the read ratio is low would ruin the story. To chase the algorithm’s approval because follower growth has slowed would destroy the specific atmosphere of my work.

Criticism should be used strictly as a tool to sharpen the edge — never as a metric to define your worth.

A creator fails the moment they mistake analytical data for absolute truth. In the territory of expression, the only truth exists within the work itself. The exterior offers nothing but probabilities, noise, and aggregated data.

The objective now is to shift that 54% curiosity from casual amusement into an engagement forced by pure stylistic precision.

I will use this detached diagnosis to refine my mechanics. The core perspective remains unchanged. Only the sharpness of the delivery will be adjusted.

I return to the keyboard, facing an indifferent audience.

I accept the utility of being evaluated by a synthetic gaze, but I accept no dictation.

I simply turn off the monitor and return to the silence of my room.
