As someone who wishes to achieve more, I used to eagerly search for focusing hacks.
I obsessed over every detail: from keeping 10% of greenery in my line of sight, eating low-GI food to avoid rapid blood sugar fluctuation, to blocking out the 23-minute window prior to the main task to hit flow state.
In reality, I was just building a gilded cage, and none of these actually worked as I expected.
As I entered the professional world, I found out that in a corporate environment, you have little control over your surroundings.
The scenario is usually this: I put on my headphones, ready to focus, but ten minutes later, a colleague pings me about a feature, and twenty minutes after that, my manager checks in on project status.
A focused environment is essential for quality work. However, when you lack the autonomy to dictate your space, spending all your energy trying to “optimize” is a distraction. Sometimes, the wisest decision is simply to do the work — regardless of the circumstances.
The essence of Optimization
Optimization = fitting to a known curve
Optimization is basically fitting to a known curve. Yet the curve has to exist in the first place, and it only does if you’ve already built something.
Optimization usually happens after you’ve achieved your goal and decided the current method is tedious or redundant.
Therefore, optimization, in most cases, can’t be strictly considered “progress” — it’s refinement, or maintenance.
But why do we obsess over it? Here are some common psychological reasons.
The Psychology of Optimizing
We’ve all been there: a project deadline looms, and suddenly, you feel an uncontrollable urge to clean your room, do laundry, or check on your plants for the third time today, even though you just watered it ten minutes ago.
Optimization is a sophisticated form of this procrastination. It presents itself as a “different problem”, which we pivot to because it feels more controllable than the daunting task actually at hand.
Dr. K, a psychiatrist and YouTuber, highlighted two other psychological drivers behind this in this video:
- Ego: The belief that maximizing every outcome will boost your ego or make life “better.”
- The fear of Limitation: Life is fundamentally limited by time and resources. Optimizing feels like a way to cheat that limitation, stemming from the fear of death and not achieving enough.
And then there are some facts about optimizations.
Optimization usually comes with preconditions and trade-offs
Optimization rarely comes for free. More often than not, it relies on specific preconditions or trade-offs, which would make it less adaptive to accidents or other usage.
Take software engineering: C++ is the standard in high-frequency trading, not Java. Why?
Because Java handles memory management (GC) automatically. It saves the developer’s work, but that “automatic” layer slows down the raw performance required for trading.
Without fundamental innovation or a paradigm shift, optimizations usually carry some hidden cost, such as increased complexity, reduced flexibility, and an inability to handle unexpected edge cases.
The Destined Ceiling
There is a limit to how much you can optimize.
By definition, fitting to a curve can only be as good as the curve itself. A polynomial curve can never ascend as fast as an exponential one. Just like in racing, no matter how talented and prepared a runner is, they will never be faster than a car.
As many startup and productivity experts emphasize, the mindset required for a 10x or 100x leap is fundamentally different from the one needed for marginal 1x or 2x gains.
Once you take the optimization route, you effectively decide on a ceiling before you’ve even started.
Optimization shifts your focus
Beyond the technical trade-offs, the “optimization mindset” changes how you act.
From Hard Work to Shortcut
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang famously noted that high expectations often lead to low perseverance, yet perseverance is a crucial characteristic to achieving great things.
When constantly looking for the “optimized” way to do something, subconsciously believing there is a better approach, you lose the grit required to push through the messy, unoptimized reality of hard work.
Obstacles that should be part of the journey start to feel like “unnecessary” burdens.
From being present to constantly seeking
I think the process of building charisma illustrates this idea well.
I once read extensively on charisma, trying to learn how to be more attractive in interactions, either through environmental triggers, gestures, or mindsets.
When I finally applied these “hacks” with people I admired, the feedback was cold.
It turns out that whilst busy calculating my strategy, I was violating the most fundamental principle: being present.
Charisma isn’t a trick; it’s being genuine and paying attention. Other tips are merely the cherry on top, and optimization distracted me from the human connection happening right in front of me.
Being present isn’t only essential in charisma, it also affects focus, which influences more broadly and deeply in life.
How to Know When to Optimize
If you aren’t sure whether optimization is productive in your case, ask yourself these four questions:
Is the outcome what you want?
There are plenty of reasons to optimize, such as saving more time, resources, or for sustainability, etc. If your optimization doesn’t directly serve your goal, then you should stop.
Is the act of optimization even worth your time and effort?
For example, if you decided to delegate one of your tedious tasks, the cost of training a team or building a new tool exceeds the time or resources saved, then it’s not worth it.
Does this optimization offer the highest ROI (return on investment)?
There are many ways to reach a goal. A goal-oriented mindset picks the most efficient one, not the one that feels the most professional or glamorous.
What are you avoiding by shifting to optimization?
If the answers to the above questions are “no,” you are likely using optimization as a comfort blanket to avoid the scary work that actually matters.
Nonetheless, recognize that the tasks you’re avoiding are often the very ones that matter most. That discomfort is your compass; start there.
Face the fear: Execute, then Optimize, finally Leverage.

To conclude, let’s step back and look at the bigger picture.
I want to talk about an idea from Naval, specifically from his book The Almanack of Naval Ravikant. I’ve read this twice now, and I find it intriguing how my reflections differ each time.
“99% of all effort is wasted.”
How we respond to this reality defines our trajectory:
- The Lying flat: “If only 1% matters, why bother? I’ll do nothing.” (Total inaction)
- The Optimizer: “Got it. I’ll work harder to make that 1% yield a better return.” (Incremental improvement based on given information)
- The innovator: “Why is it only 1%? What are the underlying assumptions? Can we innovate or leverage to make it 10% or more?” (question the status quo, and open to disrupt innovation)
While the “Lying Flat” camp struggles with the pain of starting, and the “Optimizer” compromises by refining existing processes within known constraints, the “Innovator” refuses to accept the constraints entirely.
Optimization occupies an awkward middle ground here. It almost feels like a transition state.
For those just starting, optimization isn’t in dire need; For those trying to provide extreme value, optimization often becomes a distraction — a way to “save up” for other projects rather than a way to disrupt.
Effectiveness v.s. Efficiency
In the early stages, optimization is rarely the bottleneck. Your initial research likely provides a strategy that is already “good enough.” The first priority is to get your hands dirty.
I’ve watched an interview with the founder of Zeabur, who got into YC, and he said something I found quite profound.
He mentioned that for every mistake he made, there was always someone who had warned him beforehand. Sometimes you just have to fail whatsoever.
At this stage, your focus shouldn’t be on efficiency, but on effectiveness — the raw ability to start, persist, and execute. Efficiency only matters after you find your feet.
Efficiency v.s. Leverage
While both increased efficiency and leverage yield results at scale, the latter offers a vastly larger space for manipulation.
Leverage is the bridge from 1x to 100x. It compounds.
If you want to maximize your resources, you might start by optimizing your productivity per unit.
But eventually, you must disconnect. You need to build a model where replicating output is no longer strongly associated to your input, but is instead amplified by the assets and advantages you hold.
The ultimate goal is: Play the game on your own terms. Identify your unfair advantages, apply the right leverage, and build something that doesn’t just run efficiently — but runs exponentially.
