A Rite of Passage

I recently made the decision to leave France, where I have lived for the past fifteen years.

It was something that happened earlier this year.

A designer I deeply admire creates a New Year card every year. At the beginning of the year, she senses the energy of the coming months and expresses it through a tarot card.

She then gives the cards away to some of her Instagram followers.

I apply every year.

But honestly, I never expected to win. The probability is only about three or four percent.

It almost felt less like applying to win a card, and more like taking part in a small ritual that marks the beginning of the year.

Of course, I had never won before.

And yet, this year, somehow… I did.

And the card I received was Death.

Normally, hearing the word “Death” makes people shiver. But the story behind this card was surprisingly beautiful.

✦ ✦ ✦

The name of this Death was “The End.”

It runs through the night, saying goodbye to all the things that are no longer needed.

By the time morning arrives, its name has changed to “The Beginning.”

✦ ✦ ✦

For a long time, I had been afraid of returning to Japan.

After all, I had once escaped to France, leaving behind many things I struggled with.

But during the fifteen years I spent here, it seems I quietly let go of many of those things that no longer belonged to me.

What I had called “fear” was, in truth, just one event among many. It was I who had given it meaning.

The moment I received that card, I suddenly felt something very clear inside me.

It’s time to go back to Japan.

Perhaps that beautiful Death card was simply telling me:

“You have passed your rite of passage.”

When I return to Japan, I will begin again from A.

But this A is not the lonely, naked A of someone starting from nothing.

It is a blessed A.
