Hedonism 3/4 : Will you plug into Pleasure Machine?
Philosophy
Imagine a device that delivers infinite pleasure experiences. Robert Nozick introduced this idea to challenge our views on true happiness and hedonism. Let’s explore it more in this article.
The visionary idea
Imagine yourself in a moment of true pleasure. For example, you have just finished your favorite meal, your loved ones are with you, and you feel everything is perfect. Would you like this experience to be constantly on repeat? This question interested Robert Nozick

Robert Nozick was an American Philosopher best know for his political philosophy works. His most notable book is “Anarchy, State, and Utopia,” which defends libertarian ideals and explores the limits of state power.

It’s all gravy
The Experience Machine, an idea of Nozick’s, had quite specific characteristics. Let’s discover more before participating in an experiment.
Choice
You can choose from an extensive library of pleasing experiences, selecting your life’s adventures.
Realism
The experience is so realistic that you don’t realize you are in the machine at all.
Cycles
You can plug in for two years, and then you’ll have then minutes or ten hours out of the tank to select your next two years of experiences.
Independence
Others can also plug in to have the experiences they want, so there’s no need to stay unplugged to serve them.
So would you plug in?…

The central idea of hedonism is that seeking pleasure and avoiding pain leads to a happy life. However, if this were true, then according to Nozick, plugging into the machine would represent the ultimate life, or at least be equal to the best, since the internal experience is all that counts in life.
However, Nozick came up with a different conclusion:

Reality Over Simulation
The pleasure machine poses several philosophical questions and dilemmas.
First, it compels us to consider whether pleasure alone can constitute a fulfilling life. Or do we need all experiences, pleasing and harmful, funny and sad, with ups and downs? Nozick believes we need all of life’s palettes.

Let’s consider some real-life examples that illustrate this point.
Sometimes, we choose to watch a documentary that will make us feel sad, cry, and hurt our feelings. We do this to express our emotions, discover the truth, or delve into the depths of the problem even though there is no pleasure in the experience.

Or here is another story. After winning a long-coveted award, recipients often give speeches that underscore their journey to that moment. We value victories more when we know the effort involved. As the saying goes, no pain, no gain.

Here is how Nozick explains why we choose to act this way:
*“Perhaps what we desire is to live ourselves in contact with reality.”
- Robert Nozick*
And this, machines cannot do for us. So, the main idea of the thought experiment is quite simple.
The pleasure Machine thought experiment demonstrates that human nature revolves around making choices and taking action, not just experiencing feelings like pleasure.
We wouldn’t be truly happy if we didn’t have the opportunity to make a difference, influence our lives, make mistakes, feel pain, learn from those experiences. and fulfill our desires. And we would never choose to live in a fake Wonderland.

Things to remember:
- Robert Nozick was an American philosopher who introduced the Experience Machine in 1974.
- The Experience Machine is a thought experiment about experiencing pre-scripted pleasures.
- This experiment demonstrates that pleasure alone does not fulfill life.
- Therefore, hedonism’s central idea fails to fully capture what leads to true happiness.
