When I get upset with people I disagree with, the words I use in my head aren’t flattering: stupid, racist, greedy, ignorant — you get the idea.

What I rarely stop to ask is a more important question:

Do they see themselves that way?

In a word: no.

And yet, we almost never reckon with this basic mismatch.
