The Rust of the Unspoken

We often tell ourselves that we are “protecting” others by staying silent. But the unspoken truth is corrosive — it acts like rust in the system of a relationship, slowly eating away at the foundation until only toxicity remains.

The Codependence Filter

For years, I struggled to initiate difficult conversations because I was weighed down by the potential fallout. I mistook this for empathy. My “Aha moment” came when I realized this was actually codependence. If I am “holding back” or “smoothing over” because I fear I cannot handle your reaction, I am not being kind; I am being an enabler.

Empathy, however, is immensely useful and satisfying, and it should inform the timing and pacing of “challenging conversations.”

The “Whole Truth” Protocol

Inspired by teachers like Adyashanti and Byron Katie, who recommend not just speaking the truth, but the whole truth, I realized that “the whole truth” must include the background of love and caring. But saying “I love you, but…” can often sound like a hollow formula.

The key is Somatic Integration. I don’t use a script from my thinking mind; I go into meditation and find the actual, physical sensation of my unconditional love for the person. When I speak from that vibration, the “difficult” part of the conversation is held in a container of genuine safety.

Process over Formula

The thinking mind seeks a repeatable formula because it is lazy and craves security. But a relationship is a living process. It requires presence and heart. When you stop trying to manage the other person’s “Business” and simply speak from your own heart with love, the “rust” begins to clear, and the relationship can finally breathe again.
