The Sirens of Southside: Obama, the Spectacle, and the Re-Enchantment of a Broken Covenant. They are not leading us to shore. They are singing us back onto the rocks.

I. The Image Versus The Archive

First, the separation must be absolute.

The Image: Barack and Michelle Obama, radiant in tasteful neutrals. The perfect family on a perfect patio, a tableau of educated, calm, Black excellence. A visual reprieve from the guttural chaos of Trump. The implicit promise: Remember this? We can return to this. This is what we are protecting.

The Archive: The 8-year record. The drone strikes memorialized in a “Kill List.” The deportations that earned him the title “Deporter-in-Chief.” The Wall Street cabinet that presided over the Great Foreclosure, where Black wealth evaporated while the architects of the crash were welcomed into the West Wing. The silence as Flint was poisoned. The relentless, performative compromise with a party that was already morphing into its current fascist shape. Hope was the brand. Hopelessness was the policy outcome for the very people whose tears of joy powered his ascent.

The spectacle demands we see only the Image. It begs us to forget the Archive. The Siren’s song is a melody of nostalgia for a feeling, not a reckoning with a record.

II. The Function of the Siren in the Democratic Shipwreck

The Democratic Party is not a ship adrift. It is a shipwreck. Its hull is shattered on the rocks of its own neoliberal commitments, its fealty to donors over people, its catastrophic misreading of the American soul. The lifeboats are gone.

Into this wreckage steps the Siren.

Her function is not to repair the ship. It is to hypnotize the drowning so they do not notice the water filling their lungs. She sings:

“Look at the alternative!” (The politics of fear, not vision)

“Remember the dignity!” (Aesthetics over material change)

“Protect the legacy!” (A legacy of what, precisely? Compromise with evil?) She is the perfect tool for this because her power was always symbolic, never revolutionary. Her song is a lullaby of representation: “Look how far we’ve come.” It is a song that deliberately confuses personal achievement with collective liberation.

By placing the Obama Image in stark visual contrast to Trump’s grotesquerie, the spectacle performs a brutal, emotional simplification:

Obama = Decency, Stability, Black Excellence (The Good Past) Trump = Indecency, Chaos, White Rage (The Bad Present)

This binary erases all political reality. It makes the choice about vibes, not material conditions. It reduces a multi-dimensional crisis of democracy, capitalism, and empire to a personality contest between a “good dad” and a “bad bully.”

It is the ultimate depoliticization. And it is manipulation of the highest order.

III. The Nexus of Failure: Why Him, Why Now?

He is not the accidental center of this. He is the logical, necessary nexus of the failed Democratic project.

He is the living proof of the “end of history” lie. His presidency was sold as the culmination of the arc of moral justice. Racism solved! If a Black man can be president, the system must be fundamentally sound. Therefore, any remaining discontent must be a personal, not systemic, failure. His re-emergence re-sells this lie. He embodies the politics of conciliation with power. His entire brand was “bridge-building,” which in practice meant conceding ground to Republicans and corporations before negotiations even began. In a moment that demands unyielding opposition to fascism, the party resurrects its master of pre-emptive concession. He absolves white liberalism. For white liberals, voting for Obama was the ultimate moral credential. It cleansed historical guilt. His return allows them to perform that cleansing ritual again, without having to do the harder work of supporting policies that actually transfer power or wealth. They can vote for the image of justice, not the substance. Michelle, with her “When they go low, we go high” mantra — deployed while the low was building concentration camps — provides the moral and feminine garnish. The girls are the visual stake in the future. It is a full-family re-enchantment package.

They are not selling policy. They are selling moral and emotional relief. A return to a pre-Trump “normalcy” that was, for millions, a slow-motion disaster.

IV. The ADOS Position: Resisting the Song

We are the ones who must cover our ears and open our eyes to the truth.

For ADOS, this spectacle is a particularly cruel betrayal. It is asking us to once again be the emotional and electoral shock absorbers for a party that has consistently traded our specific, owed justice (reparations) for vague, universal “hope.”

We must see this with the cold clarity of Muhammad Ali’s rattlesnake theorem. The question is not whether this particular snake means well. The question is the function it serves within the system.

Its function is to:

Herd the disillusioned back into the Democratic fold (the “lost”). Neutralize left-wing critique by making critics seem like they are attacking “Black excellence” and “our first family.” Resurrect a politics of respectability and decorum as the antidote to fascism, when fascism can only be defeated by power, not politeness. Our refusal must be as clear as our instinct: not today, not tomorrow. Naw, Dawg. We will not be re-enchanted. We will not trade our memory for their nostalgia. We will not mistake a beautiful image for a delivered promise.

The ancestors did not survive the Middle Passage for us to be placated by a pretty picture. Harriet Tubman did not build the railroad for us to be herded back into a burning plantation because the new overseer has a nicer smile.

V. What Is To Be Done? The Sovereign Gaze

Name the Operation. Every time the Image is deployed, counter with the Archive. “Beautiful family. Now, about those deportations…”

Reject the Binary. Refuse the Obama/Trump frame. Insist on a politics defined by material outcomes, not aesthetic contrasts. Our axis is not Decency vs. Indecency. It is Owed Justice vs. Continued Theft.

Invest in Our Own Nexus. Turn our energy, our trillion dollars, our political imagination away from the Sirens of Southside and toward the sovereign projects we have been blueprinting. The covenant of separation. The metaphysical sedition. Our own banks, our own media, our own political imperatives.

Let Them Drown. If the Democratic Party’s only lifeline is a ghost from its past, then it deserves to sink. We are not obligated to go down with a ship that has always viewed us as ballast, not captains. They are singing the song of a dying world. A world of polite politics, empty symbols, and broken covenants.

We are not the lost ones they are trying to herd. We are the ones who have already found the exit.

Let us turn our backs to the Sirens, and continue our walk — not back to their folded lies, but forward into the sun of our own making.

The song is beautiful. But it leads only to the rocks. We have work to do on shore.
