Love, But Make It An Ad: Why This Hinge Commercial Actually Got Me

Am I a love girl? Yes. Do I believe you can find love in unexpected ways? Also yes. On an app or off one, doesn’t matter. So when a dating app ad actually gets me, that says something, because I’ve never even downloaded one myself.

But I saw this Hinge ad and immediately felt it. Pulled on my heart strings kind of felt it. Let’s talk about why.

It Didn’t Feel Like a Commercial, It Felt True

What got me first was who was actually in it. Different relationship types, races, body types. Not one “ideal couple” picked to represent everyone. That’s what made it feel real instead of staged.

And here’s the thing, dating apps scare me. They genuinely can take a toll on people, studies have linked heavy dating app use to more anxiety and lower self esteem, so that fear isn’t just me being dramatic. But this ad didn’t sell me a fantasy where none of that exists. It showed all of it, the frustration, the losing hope, the download-delete-download cycle, right alongside the fact that you could also just meet an amazing person. That’s the actual essence of a dating app. Not a guarantee, just a possibility.

Would I Share It? At First I Said No

My gut reaction was no. It felt too personal. But isn’t love personal too? That’s the whole message. It’s hard, it’s scary, it can be embarrassing, but there’s another side to it. And sometimes giving it another chance is exactly where it starts. So maybe sharing something this personal is what actually leads someone else to give it another chance too.

I know friends who’ve downloaded the app, deleted it, and are now in real relationships because of it. That’s the core of what this ad is showing, finding your person isn’t always about the first match. Sometimes it’s the third match, fourth match, or fifth you get the point!

There’s also a lot of apps fighting for your attention right now, so it’s not enough to just say you care about love, you have to show it. Hinge is actually still updating its features to help people connect better, rolling out things like AI-powered profile feedback so people can show up as their real selves instead of relying on generic answers. That’s basically Hinge saying “we care about love just as much as anyone else, pick me,” and backing it up with the actual product, not just the ad.

And it’s not an empty promise, about 27% of couples who got married in 2025 met through a dating app. So “you’re not alone, your person is out there” isn’t just a nice line. it’s backed by real people actually finding real love this way.

That’s why this ad works. It doesn’t oversell. It just tells the truth and lets that be enough.

And for right now, we’ve got each other. See you next week, and you better not stand me up.
