Apple is changing the location of the red ‘end call’ button for the iPhone

The new update is set to officially launch this fall. CNN Business reported that the company’s annual Developer Conference in May “showed off a slew of new tools coming to iOS 17 that make calling and messaging others more personalized and customized. iPhone users, for example, will be able to design contact ‘posters,’ a custom image to appear when they call someone or receive their call.”

The change is likely to streamline the look of the phone app and put all functions in one place. Apple did not respond to a request for comment. Meanwhile, a new feature called Live Voicemail will transcribe a caller’s message in real time, so users can decide whether to ignore or take the call, and a tool called NameDrop will let users share their contact information by holding two iPhones close together. In addition, FaceTime will support the ability to leave video messages when someone isn’t available to chat.

Get ready for a repositioned end call button in iOS 17

Apple’s redesigned call interface repositions the red end call button, moving it closer to the other controls. Personally I think the change makes sense, but others are making the argument that this could mess with years of built-up muscle memory and result in people activating FaceTime when they actually want to hang up. But there’s always a chance that the design gets tweaked before iOS 17 exits beta later this year, like how Apple endlessly fiddled with the redesigned URL bar in Safari in iOS 15 before eventually giving users an easy way to swap it back if they didn’t like its new location.

Whether you’re walking home after dark or going for an early morning run, you can start a Check In with a family member or friend and as soon as you arrive home, it will automatically let your friend know. But if something unexpected happens, it can recognize that you’re not near your destination and check in with you. If you don’t respond, Check In can automatically share your current location, the route you took, your iPhone’s battery level and cell service status; all of which is end-to-end encrypted.

Apple may move the iPhone’s end call button in the next major update and it could be confusing for users

Since iOS 17 is still in beta, this may not be the final layout, but if it is, many iPhone users may have to unlearn years of muscle memory. Because iOS 17 is still in beta, this may not be the final layout we see when iOS 17 becomes available to everyone. But if it is, there could be quite the learning curve. After years accustomed to the same layout, users could have a certain muscle memory with the buttons that they’d have to undo. iOS 17 is expected to come out this fall with the launch of the iPhone 15.
