The Medicine That Could Bring Illuvium Back From The Dead
Are we about to witness Web3’s first true comeback story?

It’ s hard to write about a project with as much baggage as Illuvium. There was a time when it was the darling of Web3 — the golden child with a token valued at over a thousand dollars and a promise to bring AAA polish to blockchain gaming. That’s probably why I avoided it altogether.
Since then, the hype’s cooled, the token’s cratered (relatively speaking), and the project’s been accused of being dead in the water. That kind of fall from grace is hard to capture in a single article.
Lately though, Illuvium has experienced a sort of resurgence fueled in part by its Arena game mode. The Illuvium Pro Arena League is picking up steam and attracting players with its large cash prizes and gauntlet style action.
Then came the teasers about the MMO…
Actually, leaks about about a so-called vertical slice (a.k.a. proof of concept) of Illuvium’s Overworld mode that includes action-RPG features have been trickling out for a few months now. More specifically, the team announced their plans to revamp the Overworld game mode over 6 months ago during a townhall.
But more recently, the game’s director and CEO, Kieran Warwick, has been hitting the podcast trail to spread the word. This all culminated into a recent leak of boss gameplay footage on one of Crypto Staches’ interviews with Kieran, and it looks as though a playable version is on track for the end of the year.
After spending time across all of Illuvium’s modes, I think it could be just what the doctor ordered to bring this patient back from the brink.
In this post, I’ll take you through what’s missing in Illuvium today, what the team’s proposing, and why this pivot might be exactly what the project needs. If you’re just learning about the new roadmap for Overworld or you’re just tuning to Illuvium now, this article is for you.
What’s Missing With Illuvium Now?
I can sum up my experience playing Illuvium like this: it feels like playing four half-finished games.
The Overworld, the mode where you hunt and capture Illuvials, features gorgeous, massive levels with barely anything in them other than resource nodes and the creatures you’re meant to capture. It’s just a solo experience, so the fun of traversing the map wears off pretty quickly.

The solution? Take Overworld’s arena-style combat and spin it into a PVP auto-battler mode. You can tell this was made strictly for the community because there’s no tutorial or onboarding whatsoever. You have to know how everything works going in, or you’ll get crushed like I did. Still, (returning?) players are enjoying it, and the Illuvium team reports surging active user numbers of late.

Unfortunately, Overworld and Battle Arena don’t make use of the land NFTs investors minted years ago. The answer there is Illuvium Zero, a bare bones city sim where you build structures to extract resources and mint more NFTs. Unfortunately, it’s a shallow experience that can’t hope to compete with others like Simcity, Cities and Skylines or Civilization.

Then, there’s the matter of what to do with these hundreds of low-level beasties collecting dust because no one wants to buy them? Enter Illuvium Beyond, a sort of collector’s mode that rewards you for obtaining sets of Illuvials. Again, something that caters mostly to long-time fans with huge collections.
You can see the community’s fingerprints on development at every turn, pressuring the team to rush early access features rather than execute on its vision. And that, gamers, is how you end up spread thin over four titles.
Illuvium today lacks cohesion and a sense of purpose. Some of its pieces shine, but it’s far from a AAA experience that can capture mainstream attention.
What Is Illuvium Proposing?
That’s why the changes proposed to Overworld stand out. They promise to turn it into a full gaming experience, not just a side-kick to Arena.
Yes, it’s just a vertical slice for now, but it paints a fairly positive picture.
The video teaser that dropped recently shows your character going toe-to-toe with a massive boss. Unlike in Overworld, where you mostly shoot at running targets, the teaser shows real-time combat with melee combos and a few Illuvials fighting by your side.

One of the town hall updates I listened to mentioned sweeping changes to world navigation and pacing to push you through content more naturally — something the current game sorely lacks. That implies a real narrative layer with story missions, quests, and reasons to explore beyond grinding for shards or chasing an Illuvial. The team touched on these new lore elements in this other town hall.
There was also talk of affinity-based skill trees that let players mix and match combat styles, character classes, and new consumables tied to drone abilities. These are the building blocks for a real progression system that’s completely absent from the game.

The original pitch also proposed new enemies to fight in the overworld. They could include splinter Ranger factions, ancient corrupted machines, bio-engineered mutants, and massive Leviathan world bosses. They also want to integrate the Breach system that randomly spawn procedurally generated dungeons with mini-bosses, loot and more.

Then there’s the mysterious “MMO-lite” layer. Everyone refers to the new game mode as the “MMO”, but I still haven’t seen much about it. The team revealed that multiplayer instances will support 30 players at a time and that social activities could include group chats, questing, trading, and a hub. I suppose that’s why they refer to it as “lite”, but I look forward to learning more about these features as things develop.
In short, the team is ready to make Illuvium Overworld the immersive MMORPG it was always meant to be…
Why This Could Work
…And what it was meant to be is a PC-first, semi-open world creature capture game. Not an auto-battler with some over-glorified grinding elements.
The Overworld revamp finally tackles the project’s biggest issue — lack of depth. It gives players a reason to care about what happens in between catching Illuvials other than just shooting at resource nodes.
The Overworld already has stunning environments, cool platforming mechanics, a clever crafting system, and an extensive creature catalogue. By building on Illuvium’s existing strengths rather than tucking them away behind another game mode, adding ARPG features should easily turn Overworld into a stand out game.
More importantly, a bonafide flagship game mode unifies the ecosystem. Suddenly:
- Zero makes sense as a mobile companion builder to Overworld the same way Fall Out Shelter did for Fallout 4.
- Arena becomes the esports-friendly, PVP spin-off on mobile (hopefully with a tutorial).
- Beyond becomes that accomplishment layer all great RPG titles need.
Despite all these great plans, I still don’t think Illuvium will ever reach the AAA pedestal, so we do need to manage our expectations. Kieran said so himself that the game won’t be the next Elden Ring, even with the new gameplay. But that doesn’t mean it can’t find a niche as a fun AA budget experience.
Prices have plummeted quite a bit because the Illuvium ecosystem doesn’t currently have any good sinks for its NFTs. Although that sucks for owners hoping to turn a profit, it makes the future open-world ARPG very approachable financially. For around $20–30 USD, you can outfit yourself with enough gear and Illuvials to skip the early game grind. That’s a steal compared to most modern ARPGs and GACHA titles.
In other words, Illuvium might have evolved into a niche no one else is filling — a budget-friendly Web3 MMO that doesn’t require deep pockets or blind faith in tokenomics to be enjoyable. If the gameplay delivers, it could be in a position to turn a lot of heads in the Web3 market. And who knows, maybe even draw a traditional gaming crowd along the way.
Showing Signs of Life
After A LOT of blood, sweat and tears, it looks like Illuvium is finally finding its own identity as opposed to succumbing to the wishes of its investors.
Hopefully that sense of direction translates into focused execution. If it does, the Overworld revamp could make for one of the biggest revival stories in Web3 history. Perhaps not as drastic as No Man’s Sky or Cyberpunk 2077, but a comeback welcomed by long-time fans of the IP nonetheless.
The irony is that Illuvium’s long decline might be the thing that saves it.
Falling out of the spotlight gave the team the space to learn, experiment, refine, and rebuild without the noise of market speculation breathing down their necks. Now, with asset prices low and expectations tempered, the game is in a good place for a reboot.
No, it won’t rival Elden Ring or Monster Hunter. But it doesn’t have to. If Illuvium can offer a polished, moderately priced, genuinely fun creature-collecting ARPG that respects players, that’s enough to put it back on the map.
If you’ve sworn off Illuvium in the past, now might be a good time to get reacquainted with the project. The team is cooking, and so far, it looks like they’re using all the right ingredients.
Disclosure: I write articles with the help of AI. If you want to learn more about how I use it in my content, you can read about it here. I don’t accept sponsorships from developers or take part in ambassador programs. I test everything myself before writing about it.
