The New Barbenheimer?!

I can’t recall a film trend or phenomenon as significant as 2023’s “Barbenheimer.” The simultaneous release of Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” created a cultural event where people debated whether to see “Barbie” or “Oppenheimer” first.

Many opted for same-day double features and dressed up for the occasion; it was truly an extraordinary moment in **cinema **history. I thought such an event would be unlikely to happen again on this scale — until this year.

On December 18th, both “Dune 3” and “Avengers: Doomsday” are set to be released. There’s a chance one of them might change their release date; either “Doomsday” or “Dune” could move.

However, “Dune” has been steadfast about its date, and I suspect Marvel wants to stick to the release of “Avengers” as well. This could lead to our next “Barbenheimer,” Dunsday.”

The question remains: will this be as popular as “Barbenheimer” was in 2023? It could be, but I don’t think it will be.

We are arguably dealing with bigger movies here — the third film in the Dune Trilogy, which has become a massive modern-day franchise, and a new Avengers movie.

Both films will have tremendous hype surrounding them due to their high-profile intellectual properties.

While Barbie is based on a well-known brand, it was niche; not everyone was excited about the film, and it even sparked some controversy, which was unusual.

“Oppenheimer” was successful mainly because it was an excellent movie, backed by strong word-of-mouth praise, and, of course, it was released on the same day as Barbie. However, Christopher Nolan’s name significantly contributed to its success

.This time, we have two juggernauts lined up for release. Besides Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” these are two of the most anticipated movies of the year.

I believe they stand a chance to be more successful than “Barbenheimer” in terms of box office performance, but I don’t think they will reach the same level of cultural phenomenon. “Barbenheimer” was a unique event that fans created, and they fully embraced it.

Two completely different movies — one a fun, colorful film suitable for the whole family, and the other an R-rated, three-hour film featuring mainly dialogue in black and white — were released on the same day.

It was something unprecedented and hard to grasp unless you experienced it. The magnitude of this event was so significant that it made its way into the Oscars, with Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling poking fun at the entire “Barbenheimer” phenomenon.

It was truly a memorable time.

I don’t see the situation happening with “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Dune 3” in the same way as “Barbenheimer.” Sure, Robert Downey Jr. and Timothée Chalamet could have some fun bits at the 2027 **Oscars joking about this, and people will likely debate which movie **they want to see first.

They may even consider doing double features. However, despite both being blockbusters, the content of these films is quite different.

“Dune 3” has more depth; it’s a blockbuster with a grand scale and a compelling narrative, featuring character arcs and deeper themes beyond just spectacle.

In contrast, “Avengers: Doomsday” seems to draw interest not for its story — let’s be honest, how many people really care about the plot? — but because of the beloved characters. Audiences just want to see what this movie is all about and where it will take the MCU next.

So while they are different types of blockbusters, I don’t think the contrast is significant enough to create the same cultural moment as “Barbenheimer.”

Yes, this will still be a big event. People are talking about it, and there’s excitement for the simultaneous releases. “Barbenheimer” was a lot of fun, so I’m looking forward to another big event with these two massive films.

Now, since they are coming out on the same day, which one would I see first? If I had to choose, I’d go with “Dune 3.” I’m excited for both films in different ways, but if someone asked which one I’d see first, my answer would be “Dune 3.”

My excitement for “Avengers: Doomsday” is akin to the anticipation you feel for an event or a trip to an amusement park — it’s more about the experience than the actual movie.

I suspect it will be messy, with a plot that might be lackluster. I’m sure it will be fun and contain crowd-pleasing moments, but I’m not as excited for it as a cinematic experience.

In contrast, I’m looking forward to “Dune” as a complete movie — not just for the spectacle. It’s like choosing between fast food and fine dining.

Fast food can be enjoyable and satisfying when you’re hungry and need something quickly, but you’re not there for a top-notch experience. On the other hand, fine dining is about spending time in a nice atmosphere, enjoying quality food, and having a richer experience.

That’s how I perceive these two films: “Avengers: Doomsday” will be fun entertainment, while “Dune” offers a more substantial and in-depth cinematic experience.

So, will “Dunsday” become the next “Barbenheimer”? I think it has the potential for various reasons, but more than anything, I’m excited for another big fan event that fans of these films can rally around.
