Aquila

Constellation model home > Aquila

This is a 3D model of the constellation Aquila, the Eagle. The resolution is 9x9x9 places, so the star placements are to the closest XYZ point in the 9x9x9 volume. Depth is relative to the star’s actual distance relative to one another. Relative to the star placements, the observer (Earth) would be outside of the model somewhere near x: 5, y: 5, z: -1. For best viewing hold the model at arm’s length to minimize distortion due to parallax. The model space is 9" x 9" x 9" on a 12" x 12" base, and is built from cardboard, bamboo skewers and cord.

  1. α — Altair — 17 ly — 371
  2. γ — 460 ly — 474
  3. ζ — 83 ly — 891
  4. θ — 287 ly — 123
  5. δ — 50 ly — 641
  6. λ — 125 ly — 811
  7. β — 45 ly — 361
  8. η — 1173 ly — 339
  9. ε — 154 ly — 992

Total depth of the model = 1173–17= 1156 ly.

There is quite a bit of distortion to the constellation as the objects are forced to be mapped to the nearest bit-block. That, along with the foreshortening issues. Nonetheless, it is an accurate model of the constellations depth at a 9x9x9 resolution.
