Game 27: Rays 4 Miami Marlins 2 — Postgame News and Notes

Jake Odorizzi made a solid return in his return off the DL to the Rays rotation on Monday. The Rays (13–14) scored single runs in the seventh and against the Miami Marlins bullpen to win 4–2.

Tampa Bay took the lead for the second and final time in the seventh when Miami went to the bullpen. Derek Norris doubled to left-center off reliever Brad Ziegler to start the inning and Daniel Robertson walked. After pinch-hitter Logan Morrison flew out to center, pinch-hitter Kevin Kiermaier walked to load the bases. Steven Souza Jr then grounded into a 5–4 fielder’s choice, as Norris scored for a 3–2 advantage. Corey Dickerson walked, re-loading the bases, but Junichi Tazawa struck out Rickie Weeks Jr, ending the threat.

However, the Rays tacked on in the eighth. Brad Miller walked against Tazawa, stole second and third, and scored on a two-out single by Robertson.

The single tallies put reliever Danny Farquhar on the right side of the ledger. Farquhar threw a perfect sixth, and then gave way to Jumbo Diaz. Diaz threw a scoreless seventh, then allowed a two-out single and walk in the eighth, but Chase Whitley got Christian Yelich to hit a comebacker, keeping the tying runs aboard. Alex Colome then worked a perfect ninth for the save.

Odorizzi started and threw 78 pitches in his first appearance since April 15th. He allowed just two hits and a walk over five innings, striking out six.

Odorizzi walked his first batter of the game in Dee Gordon. Gordon, stole second, went to third on an errant Norris throw and scored on a Christian Yelich sac fly for a 1–0 lead. After Tim Beckham’s two-out two-run double in the fourth gave Tampa Bay a 2–1 advantage, Marcell Ozuna homered in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at two. That set the stage for the late frames.

Tampa Bay will try to end an eight-game road trip with a victory on Tuesday. Alex Cobb starts opposite Edinson Volquez in a matchup of righties. Coverage on the Rays Radio Network begins at 6:30 p.m., and Dave and Andy will have the call with first pitch at 7:10.
