Ramadan Sehri: An Important Component of Fasting in Ramadan
Ramadan Sehri: An Important Component of Fasting in Ramadan

Ramzan is a holy month that encourages people to fast, reflect, pray, and devote themselves to Allah (SWT). It is the month in which Muslims fast continuously from dawn to sunset and refrain from eating, drinking, and other things. One of the most significant of these fasts is the pre-dawn meal, called Sehri.

What Is Sehri?
Sehri is the last meal eaten before Fajr (dawn) prayer, from which the fasting beginning for that day is announced. A major aspect of the whole Ramadan fasting ritual, it provides sustenance and strength for the rest of the day. The meal is taken prior to the time of Fajr prayer having begun, as soon as the Fajr adhan (call to prayer) is made, the fast automatically starts.
The Significance of Sehri

Sehri is much more than a meal; it has some special spiritual and developmental value in terms of fasting. It was never an exaggeration for its noteworthy position given importance to Sehri by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in a few Hadiths. One of them is - "Partake in Sehri, for indeed, there is a blessing in it." So, this Hadith specifies the spiritual benefit of Sehri, which means the meal is not only the physical source of nourishment, but blessings as well. This is the belief that will enable Muslims' endurance for the long fast-their physical energy and soul enrichment.

Nutritional Guide for Sehri
Sehri is the most important meal for fasting Muslims, but not for just-nutritious and hydrating foods. The objective was simply to be satisfied with the body's energy and hydration to uphold the day. Some pointers are given below to satiate consumers with a balanced Sehri:
- Complex Carbohydrates: Whole grains, oats, and brown bread slow-release energy into the body. This encourages the sustenance of energy throughout the day.
- Proteins: Eggs, yogurt, nuts, and not so fatty meats are the best good protein sources that make strong muscles and give you a full tummy for a long time.
- Fruits and vegetables: Fresh fruits, like bananas, and fresh vegetables, such as cucumbers and tomatoes, contribute to hydration, fiber, and vitamins that keep the body energized and balanced.
- Hydration: Drinking water comes critical with the Sehri preparation so that dehydration doesn't occur during fasting. Hydrating foods like watermelon or cucumber may also be incorporated.
- Avoiding Sugary Foods: Sweets are tempting; make one feel energized almost instantly, only to be followed by a crashing discharge that makes one feel even more fatigued than he started with at the end of the day.
The Spiritual Significance of Sehri
Sehri would never be a physical necessity by itself; it also has great religious sentiment behind it in Ramadan. To wake up early for Sehri is a memory of what the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his companions have gone through. It is a means for purification of the soul, practicing discipline, a connection to Allah (SWT).
In such an event, Muslims also share the collective experience of fasting with their family.
