UI/UX Case study: Pregnancy tracking app

Hey guys. Here’s another case study for a new app! 😃 It’s a concept for a pregnancy tracking app. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did working on it. Let me walk you through the entire process of creating the app.

Introduction

Pregnancy is a very challenging period in a woman’s life, which can be freely described as a roller coaster of emotions, above all. In addition to visible changes in physical appearance, pregnant women can experience numerous changes in the area of mental health. That’s exactly why I wanted to provide pregnant women with some kind of support using an app, where they can track their pregnancy progress on a daily basis, have a ready-made menu suggestion, various suggestions for relaxation, education, as well as the opportunity to connect with other pregnant women and much more.

Research

My personal experience, more precisely going through the entire pregnancy period (x2 😊), was very helpful for this phase. I know for myself how confusing pregnancy can be, how many symptoms can scare a pregnant woman. I’ve had the opportunity to meet a large number of pregnant women and most of them are troubled by more or less the same questions. In addition to talking to a large number of women who have gone through or are currently going through this condition, I did a lot of research about pregnancy by reading books and searching for articles on the internet. I also looked at other apps on this topic, and all of this together was a lot of material that served as the basis and help for creating this type of app..

Problems and solutions

1. Support

Many pregnant women feel misunderstood during pregnancy, as if they are left to their own devices. It is very important to have people around them who will understand, listen and support them during this period. For this reason, the app has a community that allows you to connect with other pregnant women, share experiences and information and socialize. And who can understand you better than someone who is going through the same thing as you?

2. Pregnancy education/information

During pregnancy, you have to think about everything, first of all about your health and the health of your baby. When the results of medical tests come in, pregnant women are often faced with a bunch of different parameters and numbers. It can be confusing because most women don’t know what it all means, i.e. whether the pregnancy is developing in the right direction. To avoid headaches, the application would have an option to enter various parameters (mother’s and baby’s) and compare them with average values. You can also enter data from previous medical examinations, so that you always have it all on your phone. The application also offers the possibility of education related to pregnancy, recommended exercises, relaxation methods, as well as mental health care.

3. Forgetfulness during pregnancy

Have you heard of the term “pregnancy brain”? Here’s an interesting fact — during pregnancy, a woman’s brain remembers only 8% of things. This is the so-called “pregnancy brain”, which is memory loss, or forgetfulness. Many pregnant women go through this phase. This can be quite inconvenient, so if that’s the case, there’s a schedule inside the app. There you can record all your daily activities, important events, doctor’s appointments. Simply set an alarm to remind you of all your obligations. When I was pregnant and waiting in line for a doctor’s appointment, I noticed that pregnant women always carry a folder full of papers with them. These are the results of all previous examinations and other important documents that pregnant women should always have with them when go for checkups. Imagine a situation where a woman has pregnancy brain and forgets to bring all of that. If she brought her phone with her, she can find the results of previous medical examinations in the app, with all the details, which is a relief and one less worry.

4. Nutrition

A very important item in pregnancy is certainly nutrition. Questions such as what can I eat during pregnancy, what foods should I avoid, whether I should eat for two… are present among all pregnant women who take care of their health and want a healthy pregnancy and baby. A common question is how many calories to consume per day and how many pounds to gain during pregnancy and whether this is within normal limits. This would not be a problem for pregnant women either, as the app offers personalized recommendations for 3 main meals and 2 healthy snacks each day and a complete weekly menu. Of course, the meals are calorie-balanced and tailored to each pregnant woman depending on her dietary preferences. They can also find many useful tips for nutrition during pregnancy.

User persona

This application is intended for all pregnant women who want to track the course of their pregnancy. The user persona is a woman, 20–50 years old, of any nationality, religion, skin color, any level of education…

Colors and typeface

I chose dark pink as the main color. In addition to it, there are pastel shades of pink, beige and light green. All these colors are associated with tenderness, optimism, a new beginning and give a feeling of peace, tranquility and freshness. I used Lato typeface.
