This time of the year is when I usually check my retirement portfolio. I just want to share that I’m now more comfortable with keeping my hard-earned investment funds in investment vehicles like time deposits for a longer term — three to seven years — in exchange for higher returns or interest. My primary purpose for my long-term investing journey is to have a comfortable retirement and lifelong financial security.
In the future, I’m definitely terrified of living hand-to-mouth or being a sickly financial burden to my family members. Who wants that kind of miserable life in their greying years? Of course, I want to become like my Baby Boomer parents who are enjoying their hard-earned pensions — traveling, relishing fine dining, keeping fit and healthy, and continuously living in financial security.

As I grow older, I am more comfortable with a risk tolerance that is higher than when I was a novice investor in my early 30s. From being a conservative investor, I must say I’m now a moderately aggressive investor. I don’t mind keeping my hands off my investment funds — which are idle funds at the moment — for several years. I’m planning to retire in my early 50s. I don’t want to keep burning myself out by the time I’ve reached my senior years. In my early 50s, I want to focus more on keeping my sound health already and how I can avoid illnesses that come with ageing.
Therefore, I’m “planting trees” now. These “trees” are my investment funds, which I also would like to fancifully refer to as “gasoline” that will “keep my car going.” I want to use “cookies” as a metaphor for my investment funds as well. Of course, I always want “cookies” in my “cookie jar,” even when I’m retired already in the future.
Anyway, in this blog post, I want to mention how I love listening to Barron’s staffers, Mr. Ben Levisohn, Mr. Al Root, and Mr. Josh Schafer. I super-trust these finance writers’ insights. They follow the money, and I consider them as my reliable guides in the wonderful world of finance and markets.

Mr. Levisohn is Barron’s senior managing editor, who walks me through the week’s market headlines, along with Barron’s Live host Ms. Lauren Rublin. He also covered financial markets for leading business newspapers, such as The Wall Street Journal, BusinessWeek, and Bloomberg. Mr. Levisohn is a former stock trader. Meanwhile, Mr. Root is Barron’s associate editor. I gathered that he spent 17 years on Wall Street. Mr. Root also served as the industrial strategist of broker R.W Baird.

Mr. Schafer is an investing personality and serves as Barron’s newsletter editor. I learned that he writes a Substack, Searching for Signals with Barron’s, that tells the markets and the economy’s story through charts. Mr. Schafer covered the economy and markets at Yahoo! Finance before becoming a Barron’s writer.
Besides loving their articles, I also enjoy it when Mr. Levisohn, Mr. Root, and Mr. Schafer occasionally gather together at the Barron’s Live episodes, like last Monday, February 9, 2026. I certainly have fun listening to their witty discussions about the unpredictable yet surely dynamic and exciting nature of the global financial markets.
I absolutely love global finance or international finance, and listening to this trio’s insights whenever they huddle together at Barron’s Live certainly brightens up my day. Barron’s Live is my favorite webcast, and Mr. Levisohn, Mr. Root, and Mr. Schafer are among my many favorite people in the wonderful world of finance and markets, for they are very enlightening and educational for me. They truly give so much value to growth and value investors like myself. I must say my invaluable time is never ever wasted with this trifecta of finance pundits.
