Writing a Book Reflection Felt Harder Than I Expected

But the Struggle Was Worth It

I love reading memoirs because they are real. My world expands with the writers’ experiences, and there is always so much to learn from a life lived honestly. Recently, I read an incredible memoir, The Bookseller at the End of the World by Ruth Shaw, and felt a deep and immediate urge to write a reflection on it.

I thought it would be simple. But it wasn’t.

As always, I worked on the title and subtitle first. They came to me almost instantly: “Looking Back to a Bitter Life with a Little Humor: From kicking survival instinct to finding home”. I loved it. I checked on the notes I had marked while reading, flipping through the book repeatedly, and jotted down my reflections in neat bullet points on my writing pad, mapping out key phrases and linking them to specific parts.

I sat back, feeling confident. Good, I thought. My reflections are clear, and I have the perfect parts of the book to back them up.

So, I opened my laptop and started hitting the keyboard to expand those points into a full draft. The introduction went smoothly. The first reflections flowed onto the screen without a hitch. But by the time I hit my second reflection, I got completely stuck.

I sat there murmuring to myself, “Oh, this is so hard to write…” I typed a paragraph, deleted it, typed another, and deleted that too. I was so frustrated I almost wanted to give up entirely.

The problem was the timeline. I kept jumping back and forth through Ruth’s life, which would confuse readers. But if I followed the timeline step by step, I worried the article would sound like a summary instead of a reflection.

I sat by my laptop for an hour, struggling with which direction to take. To clear my head, I browsed Medium to see how other writers tackled book reflections and tried to put myself into readers’ shoes. Finally, I decided that following the timeline was the best choice; it would be the easiest and most natural path for a reader to follow.

But my choice brought the next massive challenge: balancing retelling and reflection.

If I retold too much, the article would feel like a book report. But if I focused too much on my own thoughts, readers might not understand why I felt that way.

To find the balance, I had to think deeply and ruthlessly select only the most critical, impactful parts of Ruth’s story. This was difficult because I loved too many parts and wanted to share them all, but I had to control my greedy mind.

I summarized only those specific moments, immediately pairing them with the reflection they triggered. Once I found the rhythm, the words finally began to flow. I felt comfortable again. The narrative structure made sense for me, and more importantly, it made sense for the readers.

Writing a book reflection is really tough work, but I finished anyway. There are undoubtedly areas I can still improve, but every piece of writing is a lesson. No matter what, just start anyway, and you will find a way to push through the difficulties.

Standing on the other side of the struggle, I feel great. And the next time a book moves me, I know I’ll be more ready to face the black page all over again.
