A letter to my future black self

I still hear comments like, “I can’t see you in the dark..”, “you would look better with straight her”…and the usual “you’re pretty for a black girl.”
But hey ho! since the George Floyd travesty – people have been forced to open their eyes and acknowledge the reduced but still ever present problem. Racism.
The thing that means I might always have to work twice as hard to get the same thing as my fellow, less melanated peers
this whole being black thing is getting a little bit harder to sell … I promise it can be fun too.
infact so fun that I can’t scroll on my fyp without seeing someone dancing to some sort of afrobeats
seeing our unique styles as a blueprint for almost every trend
our food manipulated to be palatably “normal”,
our slang used in the incorrect way
why do people love blackness till the people are involved?
anyways, sorry you, this took a turn real quick…
how are you? what are you up to these days?
still black? hah
I am hoping this letter isn’t the only thing that’s a thing of the past and the content of it is too.
To be a black girl in your society – hopefully means to have equal oppurtunies, for black success to just be known as “success” to be seen but not to be fetishsized, it means people have been educated on black hair, the black experience and black history.
Bonus points if your Celebrities don’t have a racist past(and hopefully not a racist future….)
love,
Me…I guess
