Why My Dandruff Got Worse After Home Remedies (And What I Learned)

“Dandruff” is probably one of the most common problems people deal with… and yet, most of us don’t really stop to ask why it’s happening in the first place.
Instead, we jump straight into trying random home remedies we see online.

That’s exactly what I did.
Honestly, I should have started by understanding my scalp instead of experimenting with everything I came across. But at the same time, that “experiment phase” taught me what actually works for me — and what definitely doesn’t.
The DIYs That Made My Scalp Worse
Here are some things I tried thinking would fix my dandruff, but ended up doing the opposite:
1. Onion juice
Everyone talks about it like it’s a miracle ingredient.
But for me? It made my scalp more irritated and uncomfortable.
2. Apple cider vinegar

It can help with buildup and pH balance… But only if used correctly.
Using it without proper dilution? That led to a burning sensation and dryness.
3. Overusing henna
I thought more henna = more conditioning.
But instead, it made my hair extremely dry and my scalp more sensitive, especially when I started mixing too many ingredients into it.
The truth is: These remedies aren’t completely wrong… But using them blindly or too often made my scalp worse.
So why didn’t they work for me?
After all that experimenting, this is what I realised:
Not every DIY suits everyone. Scalp health should always come first.
- Onion juice is strong. Even if it helps some people, it can irritate sensitive scalps.
- Apple cider vinegar works only when diluted properly- otherwise, it damages more than it helps.
- Henna, when overused, can dry out your hair and disturb your scalp balance.
What actually helped me instead
I stopped trying everything at once.

Instead, I focused on keeping things simple:
- Gentle, consistent hair routine
- Not overloading my scalp with too many treatments
- Balancing oiling and moisture (not overdoing either)
- Paying attention to how my scalp reacts
Sometimes doing less actually helped more.
I used to think my dandruff was the main problem.
But now I realise “My constant experimenting was making it worse.”

Not every trending DIY is meant for you. And more importantly, “natural” doesn’t always mean “safe for your scalp.”
At the end of the day, it’s not about trying everything — It’s about understanding what your hair actually needs.
Sometimes the solution isn’t adding more… it’s doing less and doing it right.
