The Month of the Trap: My Trading Diary for January 2026

January is over, and it has left a trail of red candles across global dashboards.

If you look at the screen today, you see the Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) bouncing to 8,371 (+1.69%). But context is everything. Just two weeks ago, this index was teasing a breakout above 9,100. Since then, we have seen a structural collapse down to 8,232, driven by nearly $645 million in foreign capital flight.

The Anatomy of a Trap Mid-January was difficult for disciplined investors. The market was rallying. FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) was high. But the data didn’t add up. The Rupiah was weakening, and global tech stocks were jittery about AI returns — a fear confirmed last night as the Nasdaq dropped 0.72% on Microsoft volatility. So, I sat on my hands. I held cash. It felt boring then. It feels brilliant now.

Gold: The Honest Asset While equities lied about the economy’s health, Gold told the truth. Throughout the month, Gold steadily climbed, ignoring the noise. Today, it trades around $5,346. It is set to close the month comfortably above the historic $5,000 mark. This was the market’s way of saying: “Risk is not gone.”

Bitcoin’s Warning I also watched Bitcoin closely as a proxy for liquidity. It failed to hold $90,000 and is currently trading down at ~$82,330. When the most speculative asset class is bleeding, it is not the time to be a hero in the stock market.

Looking to February Today’s bounce in Jakarta is a relief, but it is not a signal. A drop from 9,100 to 8,200 is massive damage. It takes time to repair. My plan for February is simple: I will let the market prove it has found a floor. Until then, I am staying with the winners: Patience and Gold.
