This group of young scholars, all of whom have been accepted into premier science-oriented universities across the United States, had compiled something extraordinary: A comprehensive forensic audit of evolutionary biology that revealed not merely flawed theories, but a systematic corruption of the scientific method itself.

Their investigation began with a deceptively simple observation: Evolutionary biology exhibits patterns of acceptance that mirror social movements rather than empirical (i.e., evidence-based) discoveries. Through painstaking chronological analysis, they documented how evolutionary precepts gained acceptance in waves — with each wave corresponding to periods of social upheaval and cultural transformation rather than scientific breakthrough. The early 20th century’s embrace of “evolutionary genetics” during World War I, the 1930s integration of ecological concepts during global political turmoil, the 1960s-70s challenge to established theories during social revolution — each period showed “scientific consensus” shifting in lockstep with the broader cultural zeitgeist of the period.

When institutions protect belief systems instead of testing them, science ceases to be a method and simply becomes a mythology — and the trust is broken.

Falsifiability and Science

But the students talking to me went deeper than historical correlation. They identified what philosopher Imre Lakatos described as “protective belts” of auxiliary hypotheses — elaborate theoretical structures designed to shield “core beliefs” from falsification. The “crime” that the students are prosecuting here is that “falsifiability” is a critical tenet of any true science, and it cannot be sacrificed for any reason. But, in evolutionary biology, they found that the pattern of “doctrinal protectionism” had reached pathological extremes.

For example: In the 1940s and 50s, Barbara McClintock found evidence of transposons — “jumping genes” or mobile DNA segments that copy and paste themselves into new genome locations and play a key part in supporting gene regulation and disease resistance. Her research contradicted established genetic dogma, so it was ignored for more than three decades.

Even earlier, when horizontal gene transfer challenged orthodox phylogenetic assumptions about evolutionary relationships, it was dismissed for some 25 years. And when more recent molecular DNA evidence undermined accepted evolutionary timelines, new auxiliary hypotheses were conveniently manufactured to safeguard and preserve existing frameworks rather than revise the old, fundamental assumptions.

Further, referencing the rigidity and unresponsiveness that accompanies sclerosis, the students identified what they termed the “sclerotic pace of consensus” within the evolutionary community. What bothers them here is the decades-long lag between a precept’s proposal and its acceptance — which revealed not careful scientific caution but stubborn institutional gatekeeping. Their analysis showed that acceptance patterns depended more on the death of resistant gatekeepers (echoing Max Planck’s famous observation that “science advances one funeral at a time”) than on the accumulating evidence.

Damning Epistemological Corruption

Most damning was their documentation of “ridiculous precepts” that persisted despite obvious flaws. Haeckel’s Biogenetic Law (“ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny”) remained in textbooks for decades after being thoroughly debunked — because it provided a “seductively simple narrative” that supported broader theoretical commitments that the gatekeepers were unwilling to abandon.

The r/K Selection Theory also continued to be taught for decades despite being recognized as an “overly simplistic dichotomy” that failed to corelate with the visible evidence of abundant biological complexity. Even now, the idea has not been completely abandoned. Instead, it has been bolstered by several “fast versus slow life history” frameworks so that it can continue to be used as a “heuristic device” (i.e., a mental shortcut used when accuracy is elusive) in ecology education. Tragically, as the students pointed out, these weren’t isolated errors — they represented systematic failures of the scientific method to self-correct (as it should) when core theoretical commitments were at stake.

As stated earlier, the students’ most profound insight concerned ‘falsifiability’ — the cornerstone of scientific methodology proposed by philosopher Karl Popper. It basically states the fundamental principle that a scientific hypothesis must be disprovable through observation or experiment before it can be considered scientific. In other words: For a theory to have scientific merit, it must be possible to demonstrate when and under what circumstances it would be false. Only by doing this can scientists test and refine theories so as to distinguish them from non-scientific claims or pseudoscience.

Having understood the importance of this principle, the group of students engaging with me came to the conclusion that evolutionary theory had become functionally “unfalsifiable.” Although a handful of individual claims could be tested, the overall theoretical framework had become overburdened with over 80 add-on precepts in a glaring effort to accommodate any and every conceivable observation.

The students saw this as a deliberate effort to justify the alignment of conflicting facts with evolution’s core theories through “post-hoc auxiliary hypotheses” (fallacious after-the-fact assumptions masquerading as logical extensions of the fundamental premise). In other words: Generations of evolution’s gatekeepers had built a scaffold of elaborate and often illogical “supplementary elucidations” to explain away any observation in the natural world that would refute the fundamental framework they were trying to preserve at all costs. Why? Why not just reevaluate old assumptions — the way it’s done in other sciences? That’s what these youngsters wanted to know.

The students concluded that, like astrology — which can explain any and every conceivable personality trait or life event through increasingly elaborate interpretations — evolutionary biology had developed the capacity to explain any and every biological observation while making no allowance for genuine empirical (evidence-based) risks.

A theory that can explain anything explains nothing; falsifiability is the only guarantee of honesty.

Their comparison to astrology was precise and devastating: Both systems claim explanatory power while making no falsifiable predictions; both accommodate and justify a seeming alignment with contradictory evidence through auxiliary hypotheses; both use specialized jargon to obscure logical contradictions; and both maintain institutional structures that reward theoretical loyalty over empirical honesty.

The students had identified what Lakatos called a “degenerating research programme” — one that generates auxiliary hypotheses to protect core beliefs but produces no novel testable predictions. They argued that, just like astrology — which was replaced by astronomy when it became scientifically useless due to its unfalsifiability — the time had come for evolution to be replaced by a more trustworthy approach — a “real science.”

Why This Matters to Young People: The Institutional Trust Crisis

Perhaps most importantly, these students understood the broader implications of scientific corruption: They connected the intellectual dishonesty that protected failed evolutionary theories to the “epistemological rot” that has enabled (1) corporate malfeasance, (2) political deception, and (3) institutional corruption across domains. They saw that when the foundational institutions of knowledge production — universities and scientific establishments — operate as “temples” that safeguard “belief systems” rather than as truth-seeking enterprises, all downstream institutions relying on their output become suspect.

Their analysis revealed the mechanism by which intellectual dishonesty spreads: Once auxiliary hypotheses become acceptable tools to protect cherished theories from falsification, the same logic justifies protecting cherished institutions, cherished business models, and cherished power structures from accountability. The “protective belts” that shield evolutionary theory from contradictory evidence are structurally identical to the public relations strategies that shield corporations from environmental accountability, political leaders from policy failures, and media organizations from accuracy requirements.

These students were not proposing anti-intellectualism or rejecting scientific methodology. They were demanding genuine scientific rigor and intellectual honesty. They understood that science’s extraordinary power derives from its willingness to abandon cherished beliefs when empirical — verifiable, observation- and experience-based — evidence demands it. And they had diagnosed precisely how that willingness had been systematically compromised in their chosen field.

Though quite emotionally charged, their revolt was fundamentally epistemological — focused on the way in which we have been studying and acquiring knowledge: They rejected the notion that “institutional authority” could substitute for empirical evidence, that theoretical “consensus” could override logical contradictions, or that protective complexity could excuse predictive failure. They were demanding what Karl Popper originally envisioned: (1) Theories that take genuine risks through falsifiable predictions; (2) Institutional structures that reward truth-seeking over paradigm protection; and (3) Scientific communities that prize intellectual honesty over professional advancement.

The students did not reject science — they rejected the corruption of its epistemological foundations.

What made their analysis so compelling was its precision. They weren’t making broad accusations about “scientism” or “academic bias” — the way these terms are often bandied about in certain political circles nowadays. No, these students — who were all arguing their position from a clearly non-political standpoint — had conducted forensic audits of specific theoretical claims, documenting specific institutional failures, and identifying specific mechanisms by which intellectual dishonesty has perpetuated — and continues to perpetuate — itself. They had applied the tools of philosophical analysis, historical investigation, and logical scrutiny to reveal systematic corruption in the very arena they hoped to enter professionally. Simply put: They felt betrayed.

These students represented something that was unprecedented in my experience: A generation trained in scientific methodology who refused to accept “scientific authority” when it contradicted basic scientific principles. They understood that genuine science requires genuine intellectual honesty — and they have the courage to demand it from institutions that seem to have forgotten this foundational requirement.

In evolutionary biology’s protective belts, they saw the same pathology that infects every domain where power resists evidence.

PART 2: The Students Are Right — They Found the Root of Institutional Corruption

I have to say that after three decades of managing massive international projects and witnessing the intersection of scientific methodology, corporate behavior, and public policy, a profound truth has emerged from an unlikely source: A group of young science students who refuse to be silenced by academic orthodoxy. Their forensic analysis of evolutionary theory reveals something far more damaging than flawed scientific precepts — it exposes a fundamental pattern of intellectual dishonesty that has metastasized throughout our institutions.

The Erosion of Scientific Integrity Has Spawned an Expansion of Corruption

These students have identified what I am sure many seasoned professionals have observed but hesitated to articulate: that the very mechanism society has relied upon for truth-seeking — science — was compromised early on in its modern development by the acceptance of unfalsifiable theories presented as empirical fact. These ideas were then synthesized, despite the lack of empirical evidence, into what we know today as “the evolution theory.” This theory, as they thoroughly demonstrated, operates not as science but as a protected belief system — immune to genuine scrutiny and “over-tweaked” to the point of being capable of explaining away any conceivable contradictory observation through post-hoc rationalization.

Their indictment is devastating because it is accurate. When Barbara McClintock’s groundbreaking work on transposons was ignored for more than three decades, when horizontal gene transfer was dismissed for some 25 years, and when obvious fabrications like Haeckel’s Biogenetic Law persisted as “evidence” despite being thoroughly debunked, we witness not careful scientific methodology but institutional gatekeeping designed to protect existing paradigms. Hence, the students’ comparison of certain evolutionary reasoning to astrology is not hyperbole — it is a precise diagnosis of theoretical frameworks that can be adjusted to explain any outcome — and thus explain nothing.

The Yuppie Acceleration: From Scientific Corruption to Corporate Amorality

The intellectual dishonesty that infected science found its perfect cultural vessel in the 1980s through the emergence of the “Yuppie” archetype in the world of business. This generation of “Young Urban Professionals” — epitomized by Gordon Gekko’s declaration that “Greed is good” — transformed the foundational corruption of epistemological standards that was happening in the world of science into a systematic dismantling of corporate ethics.

The Yuppie phenomenon was not merely a cultural moment — it was the operationalization of the same intellectual dishonesty that had protected the evolution theory from genuine scrutiny. Just as evolutionary biologists defended ridiculous precepts through protective belts of auxiliary hypotheses, corporate Yuppies defended amoral behavior through sophisticated rationalizations like “maximizing shareholder value,” “efficient market theory,” and by borrowing concepts like “survival of the fittest” from evolution.

Corporate Ethics Divorced from Intellectual Honesty

The parallels are unmistakable. Both frameworks claimed scientific legitimacy while operating as belief systems. Both prioritized theoretical loyalty over empirical observation. Both developed elaborate jargon to obscure fundamental contradictions. And both created institutional structures that punished genuine questioning while rewarding performative adherence to doctrine.

The transformation was both systematic and devastating. Companies like Pan Am and Westinghouse, which had operated with genuine corporate souls — funding educational television, building communities for workers, and seeing themselves as stewards for broader stakeholder interests on a global scale — were replaced by entities that calculated human life in dollar terms, as Ford did with the Pinto crisis. In case you’re not familiar with that one: The company heinously decided that paying wrongful death settlements would be cheaper than fixing known fatal defects to the car they had unleashed onto the public. It went down in history as one of many in a long string of Yuppie-era corporate sins.

Corporate amorality was not born of greed alone — it was licensed by the same epistemological evasions that deformed science.

The Data Confirms Generational Patterns in Corporate Ethics

Current research validates the students’ intuition about generational influence on institutional integrity. Companies led by Generation X and younger cohorts demonstrate markedly different approaches to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles compared to those still dominated by Yuppie-era leadership.

The evidence is compelling: 51% of Gen-X, Gen-Z and Millennials hold ESG investments, compared to only 13% of Baby Boomers. More significantly, 82% of Gen-Z and Millennials consider an organization’s ESG commitments when deciding where to work, and 64% report having left jobs due to misalignment with their values. This represents not merely a preference shift but a fundamental rejection of the intellectual dishonesty that characterized the Yuppie era.

Generation X leaders, having witnessed both the hollow promises of corporate paternalism and the destructive excesses of Yuppie greed, have developed what is described in the research as a “pragmatic leadership approach” — one that emphasizes authenticity over performative metrics. Their work ethic of “work hard, play hard” reflects a deliberate balance between productive effort and genuine life fulfillment — rejecting both the Yuppie obsession with conspicuous consumption and the earlier generation’s unquestioning corporate loyalty.

The Trust Recession Does Have Scientific Origins

The breakdown of institutional trust that these students represent is not coincidental — it is the inevitable result of decades of intellectual dishonesty across multiple domains. Recent data shows unprecedented declines in trust across institutions, with only 31% of young people trusting the U.S. president, Congress, or the Supreme Court. Corporate trust has similarly plummeted, with 80% of trust-destroying events being ***internally caused*** by companies’ own actions.

What makes the students’ analysis particularly profound is their recognition that this trust collapse has scientific origins. As stated in Part 1, they understand that when the foundational institutions of knowledge production — universities and scientific establishments — operate primarily to protect belief systems rather than as truth-seeking enterprises, nothing is safe: All other downstream institutions that depend on those esteemed bastions for clarity and direction will obviously be infected by the same disease. If science itself can be corrupted by intellectual dishonesty, why should young people trust corporate claims about sustainability, government assertions about policy effectiveness, or media narratives about complex issues of any kind?

When shareholder primacy became an unfalsifiable, unassailable goal, corporations achieved “theoretical consistency” at the cost of moral collapse.

The students have identified the epistemological crisis at the heart of institutional failure. They see that the same mechanisms that protect failed scientific theories from falsification also protect corporate executives from accountability, political leaders from consequences, and media organizations from maintaining accuracy. Bottom line: Society’s leading establishment structures have abandoned truth. The protective belts of auxiliary hypotheses that immunize evolution theory from refutation are structurally identical to the public relations strategies that allow corporations to claim ESG compliance while engaging in greenwashing.

The trust recession is not a communications problem; it is the long-delayed consequence of systemic intellectual dishonesty.

Does the B-Corporation Signal a Movement Towards Genuine Reform?

Against this backdrop of institutional corruption, the emergence of Benefit Corporations (B-Corps) represents something genuinely revolutionary: A structural solution that addresses intellectual dishonesty at its source. Unlike traditional ESG frameworks, which can be — and have often been — gamed through performative compliance, B-Corporation certification requires legal, structural changes that institutionalize stakeholder capitalism.

Companies like Patagonia, which achieved a B-Corp score of 166 (more than double the 80-point requirement), demonstrate that rigorous ethical standards can coexist with financial success. Patagonia’s revenue has quadrupled over the past decade to around $1 billion annually while maintaining its commitment to using 98% recycled materials and donating 100% of Black Friday sales revenue (not just their profits) to environmental causes.

The B-Corp model succeeds and has the potential to drive institutional reform because it rejects the intellectual dishonesty that characterizes both failed scientific theories and corrupt corporate practices. B-Corps are legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on workers, customers, suppliers, communities, and the environment — not as marketing gestures, but as fiduciary obligations. This creates a model of what the students are seeking: Institutional structures that reward genuine truth-seeking over performative compliance.

The Emerging Generation’s Revolutionary Potential

As stated, the students I encountered represent something unprecedented: A generation that has forensically analyzed the intellectual foundations of institutional authority and found them wanting. Unlike previous generations who might have focused their critiques on particular policies or practices, these young people have identified the epistemological corruption that broadly underlies institutional failure across domains.

Their approach is methodologically rigorous. They do not simply assert that institutions are failing; they demonstrate how the protection of unfalsifiable theories creates the conditions for systematic corruption. They show how the same intellectual dishonesty that allows evolutionary biologists to dismiss contrary evidence also enables corporate executives to rationalize harmful behavior and political leaders to ignore policy failures.

Most importantly, they are demanding intellectual honesty as a prerequisite for institutional legitimacy. They will not accept claims based on “authority” alone. They insist on empirical evidence, logical consistency, and genuine accountability. Although previous generations (including mine) were also critical of “the establishment” in various ways, what is happening now represents a fundamental shift from prior generational critiques: In the past, the focus was often on changing institutional outputs while generally accepting the underlying epistemological frameworks. The current criticism is therefore fundamentally different.

Toward Holistic Ethics: Integration as the Path Forward

The path forward requires what these students implicitly understand: Real “integrity” demands the holistic integration of ethical principles across all institutional domains. This means rejecting the compartmentalization that allows scientific institutions to operate by different standards when compared to business institutions, which operate by different standards when compared to political institutions.

Genuine ESG implementation exemplifies this holistic approach. Each component — Environmental, Social, and Governance — must be honestly and straightforwardly integrated into organizational operations. Environmental commitments cannot be performative greenwashing. Social responsibility cannot be demographic tokenism. Governance cannot be elaborate structures that obscure rather than ensure accountability.

The students’ critique of evolution theory provides the template: They demand (1) that theories purporting to be scientific take genuine risks through falsifiable predictions, (2) that evidence be evaluated honestly rather than rationalized away, and (3) that institutional structures reward truth-seeking over paradigm protection. Applied to corporate governance, this means ESG frameworks that (1) create real accountability mechanisms, (2) measure genuine impacts, and (3) institutionalize stakeholder obligations rather than shareholder primacy.

Data Ethics as the Proving Ground

My experience developing data ethics frameworks for international projects involving American and European companies illustrates both the problem and the solution. The striking differences in how these companies viewed data ethics — with Europeans typically implementing genuine privacy protections while Americans often pursued performative compliance — reflected deeper epistemological differences about the relationship between institutional claims and actual behavior.

The successful frameworks emerged when we abandoned the intellectual dishonesty of trying to reconcile incompatible approaches and instead developed genuinely empirical (evidence-based) methods for evaluating data ethics practices. This required: (1) Measuring actual outcomes rather than accepting policy statements; (2) Evaluating real impacts on affected populations rather than relying on corporate self-assessments; and (3) Creating accountability mechanisms that functioned regardless of cultural differences.

This experience suggests that the students’ demand for intellectual honesty can be operationalized across institutional domains. The key is (1) developing measurement systems that resist gaming, (2) accountability structures that function independently of institutional self-interest, and (3) evaluation frameworks that prioritize empirical evidence over theoretical consistency.

Authenticity is not a marketing strategy — it is the operational expression of intellectual integrity.

PART 3: Where Are We Headed?

Could This Lead to a Renaissance of Corporate Ethics?

What we witnessed over the past couple of decades was clearly the slow death of corporate ethics. And what may be before us could well be its painful rebirth. But a lot needs to happen for this to occur.

The old model of paternalistic corporate beneficence, exemplified by Pan Am’s unprofitable Washington-Beijing route or Westinghouse’s worker communities — and their global-scale philanthropic projects — was always vulnerable to economic pressure. Why? Because it depended on enlightened leadership rather than legally-enshrined structural constraints.

The Yuppie era’s explicit rejection of ethical constraints in favor of shareholder primacy may have been considered “intellectually consistent” by many — but it was incredibly socially and environmentally destructive. It operationalized the same intellectual dishonesty that protects bad scientific theories. How so? When “maximizing shareholder value” becomes the unfalsifiable and unassailable goal, any behavior that increases stock prices becomes justified, regardless of the often-heinous broader consequences.

The emerging model, driven by generations who are now refusing to accept intellectual dishonesty, creates structural requirements for ethical behavior. B-Corporation legal frameworks, stakeholder capitalism requirements, and genuine ESG accountability represent institutional innovations that do not require enlightened leadership to function effectively. However, implementing widespread intellectual honesty on a global scale — anchored in legal requirements for integrity and ethics — will not be easy.

As a Start, Let’s Accept the Diagnosis

It’s never easy to accept the diagnosis of a life-threatening disease. But knowing the diagnosis is always better than the alternative. These young scientists have given society an extraordinary gift: A precise diagnosis of the epistemological corruption that underlies institutional failure across domains. By forensically analyzing evolution theory, they have revealed the intellectual dishonesty that protects bad ideas in science, bad practices in business, and bad policies in government.

Their refusal to accept “authority”-based claims represents a return to genuine empiricism — insistence on proof. Their demand for intellectual honesty challenges institutions to justify their practices through evidence rather than tradition. Their systematic critique of protected belief systems offers a methodology for evaluating institutional claims across domains.

Most importantly, their vision of scientifically rigorous, ethically integrated institutions provides the framework for rebuilding trust in institutional authority. They understand that trust cannot be restored through public relations campaigns or performative reforms. It requires fundamental changes to institutional structures — with rewards for truth-seeking over paradigm protection, accountability over plausible deniability, and genuine stakeholder service over narrow self-interest.

They envision a future where rigorous ESG practices are built on genuineness rather than performance, where corporate structures institutionalize ethical behavior rather than relying on enlightened leadership, and where intellectual honesty becomes the foundation for institutional legitimacy. This offers hope for overcoming the ‘trust recession’ that currently threatens broad-based governance and market capitalism alike.

Their revolution will not be televised because it is fundamentally epistemological. It targets not particular policies or practices but the intellectual frameworks that generate institutional corruption. By demanding genuine truth-seeking mechanisms, real accountability structures, and authentic stakeholder service, they are hoping to create the conditions for a renaissance of institutional integrity that could restore the social trust necessary for complex modern societies to function effectively. Will it ever happen? We will have to wait and see.

The revolution that is brewing among these students will not be televised because it is epistemological — it seeks to rebuild the conditions for truth itself.

In the meantime, we have to acknowledge that the students are right: The scaffold is broken. But rather than abandoning the scientific enterprise, they are demanding that it be cleansed. Rather than rejecting institutional authority, they are insisting on the restoration of genuine legitimacy. Rather than accepting the current choice between naive corporate paternalism and cynical, degrading shareholder primacy, they are determined to create and reward structural alternatives that institutionalize ethical behavior.

Their vision of holistic ethics — where intellectual honesty in science enables genuine accountability in business, and which supports authentic governance in administrative leadership — represents the most promising path forward for our societies that are struggling with institutional corruption and social trust deficits. The question is: Will our existing institutions adapt quickly enough to benefit from this insight, or will they be replaced by completely new structures that embody fundamental principles of integrity and ethics from the ground up?

Restoring trust begins with a single demand: That institutions tell the truth even when it costs them power.
