Your Therapist Is a Person Too!

There is something I wish more clients understood.

Your therapist is a person, too.

Not because we need sympathy. Not because we need you to take care of us. Not because the session should ever become about us.

But therapy was never meant to be a one-sided transaction between a consumer and a service provider.

It is a relationship.

Every week, people sit down and tell us about trauma, betrayal, addiction, grief, abuse, fear, hopelessness, and loss. We willingly step into those stories. We sit in places many people spend their entire lives avoiding. We do it because we care and because we believe people can heal.

But sometimes the modern culture around therapy creates an unhealthy expectation.

Some clients arrive believing that because they paid for fifty minutes, they own fifty minutes.

Every second must be extracted.

Every moment must be used.

Every silence must be filled.

Every session must produce something.

Yet healing does not work that way.

Therapy is typically structured with 50 minutes of deep focus and 10 minutes for us to transition. Those final minutes aren’t wasted time — they’re what allow us to be fully prepared for you and the next person. Respecting this structure ensures we’re as ready for you as you deserve, every time.

Sometimes the most meaningful moments happen in the pause.

Sometimes growth happens in reflection.

Sometimes, a genuine human connection matters more than another technique, worksheet, or intervention.

You would be surprised how meaningful a simple question can be.

“How are you doing?”

Not because your therapist needs counseling.

Not because they need emotional support.

But it acknowledges something important.

There is a human being sitting across from you.

A husband.

A wife.

A father.

A mother.

A son.

A daughter.

Someone who has experienced joy, loss, struggle, fear, disappointment, and hope just like you.

The irony is that many people come to therapy because they want a deeper human connection, while unknowingly treating the therapist as if they were a machine designed to dispense emotional solutions.

Real healing happens in relationships.

Relationships require recognizing the other person's humanity.

This does not mean taking responsibility for your therapist’s emotions.

It does not mean protecting them from difficult conversations.

It does not mean censoring your pain.

Bring your pain.

Bring your anger.

Bring your confusion.

Bring your worst day.

That is what we are here for.

But remember that sitting across from you is not an algorithm, a diagnosis machine, or a paid friend.

It is a person.

Most therapists carry your stories long after the session ends.

We celebrate your victories.

We worry when you disappear.

We grieve when life hurts you.

We smile when you finally break through something that has trapped you for years.

The best therapy happens when two people show up honestly.

One with the responsibility to help.

One with the courage to be helped.

And both recognizing the humanity of the other.
