Universal High Income - The Anesthetic

I replied to Elon’s post about Universal High Income. The argument was simple: free checks don’t solve meaning, they just reduce friction. Universe 25. WALL-E. The pattern of what happens when you remove scarcity without replacing it with purpose. The comment started climbing. Around 42,000 views, 600 likes. Then my account got suspended.

It came back. No explanation. Just back.

An email arrived from X Support: “Our automated systems have determined there was no violation and have restored your account to full functionality.”

No human reviewed it. An automated system suspended the account, and an automated system cleared it. Nobody decided anything, in either direction. I’ll come back to that.

The thread ran for a day. Roughly half the replies agreed. Roughly half pushed back. Both sides argued hard and brought real things with them.

The optimists said: humans aren’t mice. We’ll still have competition, drive, ego. Retirees don’t collapse into nothing. They find what they love and spend their time on it. UHI is just basics, not comfort. Free people find meaning.

One person made the retirement point with confidence. Retirees enjoy all their free time doing what they are most passionate about.

I asked: what does that look like for a five-year-old who has never had structure, discipline, or a reason to build anything? Retirement works because it comes after forty years of earning it. The freedom means something because of what came before. Apply that logic from day one and you don’t get a retired person. You get someone who never had a reason to start.

Nobody had a clean answer for that.

The pessimists said: look at the Great Society. Look at what decades of welfare programs actually produced. Dependency. Erosion. The byproduct of removing consequence is not freedom, it is drift.

Both sides were arguing about human nature. What I kept trying to say is that this time human nature is not really the question.

The question is math.

Every automation wave before this one still needed a human somewhere in the chain. The loom needed someone to run it. The computer needed someone to write the code. The role changed, but the human stayed in the equation.

This time the role itself is being replaced. Not just what people do. What they are in the system.

When someone said Universe 25 was a lab fluke, that removing friction doesn’t erode people, it just reveals who has no internal drive, I understood what they meant. Humans are not mice. We have language, culture, ambition, ego. The experiment doesn’t translate cleanly.

But the experiment was never really the point. The point is what happens to a system when the people inside it are no longer needed for it to function. Mice or humans, the dynamic is the same. When your participation becomes optional to the system, the system doesn’t wait for you to find meaning. It just continues without you.

When you understand that, UHI starts to look different.

It is not a solution. It is a transition mechanism. A way to manage people who are no longer in the equation without the friction of them realising it yet.

Think about early retirement packages. Companies have been doing this for decades. A division becomes redundant. Instead of laying people off loudly, you make them an offer. You frame it as a gift. The person walks away feeling okay about it. The company moves on lighter, faster, without them.

UHI at scale is the same mechanism. Just run by governments instead of HR departments. Applied not to a division but to a generation.

The people building this are not plotting against workers. They are running the oldest corporate playbook in the world. Restructure. Offer a package. Move on.

The difference is there is no next company hiring those people. There is no next wave of jobs absorbing them. The package is the end of the story.

Nobody is designing it this way on purpose. That is actually what makes it harder to argue against.

If it were intentional, you could point at the villain. You could name the plan. But this is not a plan. It is a direction. The direction is set by what the people building AI are optimising for: efficiency, scale, returns. Not what happens on the other end.

The people at the top of this are not thinking about the majority. Not because they are malicious, but because the majority is not in their calculation. The optimisation runs in one direction. The byproduct falls on everyone else.

The outcome is slow. Not everyone becomes irrelevant at once. It happens in layers. Some people adapt. Some get absorbed into the new system at a different level. Others drift out over time. The system keeps running. Nobody had to decide anything.

That is how it stays invisible while it is happening.

What gets called UHI in the debate is really a welfare layer. A floor that keeps people stable enough not to cause problems. A small group stays in the loop of creation and control. Everyone else is kept comfortable. Not by force. By design that nobody designed.

Someone in the thread said: don’t worry, people will find their own purpose.

Maybe. But purpose that is optional at scale tends to stay optional. When survival is no longer the driver and structure is no longer the context, most people don’t discover what they are capable of. They find the path of least resistance and stay on it. That is not a character flaw. It is what comfort does when it has no direction underneath it.

The shift won’t feel dramatic. It will feel normal. And by the time it feels like something, the structure will already be in place.

My account came back. I kept posting. The thread is still there.

But what I keep thinking about is not the suspension. It is that it didn’t feel like suppression. It felt like a system doing what systems do when something creates noise in the wrong direction. No decision. No malice. Just a quiet push back toward equilibrium. An automated system in, an automated system out.

That is the pattern. Small. Systemic. And almost impossible to name while it is happening.
