Billion-dollar ‘slush fund’ of taxpayer money raises alarms, as children and families go without

Trump administration’s reported ‘Anti-Weaponization Fund’ underscores government’s troubling priorities

At a time when millions of children and families across the country are struggling to afford food, housing, health care, and basic necessities, the Trump administration has reportedly agreed to create a nearly $1.8 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund,” using taxpayer dollars, as part of a settlement tied to President Trump’s lawsuit against the IRS over leaked tax returns. This fund, according to reports, would compensate Trump allies and others claiming they were targeted by the government.

$1.8 billion.

It’s an astonishing amount of money. Especially as vital services are slashed and children and families across the country are being told, over and over again, that there simply isn’t enough federal funding for basic needs. Not enough money for food assistance. Not enough money for health care. Not enough money for affordable housing. Not enough money for schools. Not enough money for mental health services. Not enough money to ensure housing and educational stability for students experiencing homelessness.

But somehow, even after the cruel cuts of last year’s budget, there is $1.8 billion of federal taxpayer money available for what many already describe as a political slush fund.

At NCYL, we work with children and families who must navigate the consequences of these federal budget choices every day. Young people are struggling to learn while hungry or unhoused. Immigrant children are facing exploitation and trauma without adequate supports. Families are losing health coverage and children are falling through gaps in systems that have been underfunded for years.

These experiences are what make this reported settlement feel so deeply disconnected from reality.

That amount of money, according to the National Priorities Project’s interactive “Trade-Offs” Calculator, could fund SNAP benefits for roughly 780,000 people for a year, or fund a full year of Medicaid coverage for more than 500,000 children, or support more than 100,000 children in Head Start programs, or so much more.

Federal spending choices have actual meaning for people’s lives, and we should expect that these choices reflect the priorities of citizens. You can reach out to your representatives and let them know that you don’t support this gross mismanagement of taxpayer money.

Children deserve better than this. They deserve leaders willing to invest in stability, opportunity, dignity, and care. And they deserve a government that sees investments in children and families not as optional, but as essential.
