Framing Effect
The fact didn’t change. The way it was handed to you did.

1. Same Number, Different Decision
Two groups of patients. Same surgery. Same risk.
Group A is told: “90% of patients survive this operation.”
Group B is told: “1 in 10 patients die from this operation.”
Mathematically identical. Psychologically, worlds apart.
Group A chooses surgery at significantly higher rates. Group B hesitates.
The risk didn’t change. The frame did. And the frame changed the decision.
2. Where You’re Being Framed Right Now
Retail. “Was $200, now $120” isn’t a price. It’s an anchor with a story attached. The original price may have never been real.
Finance. “Keep 95% of your returns” lands differently than “5% fee.” Same number. One feels like a gift. One feels like a tax.
Leadership. “We’re protecting what we’ve built” and “we’re cutting costs” can describe the exact same decision. One mobilizes people. One demoralizes them.
The frame isn’t decoration around the fact. In the mind’s processing, the frame is part of the fact.

3. Why It Works
Loss aversion. Losses feel roughly twice as painful as equivalent gains feel good.
Framing exploits this asymmetry. “10% die” activates the loss system. “90% survive” doesn’t, even though both describe the same reality.
The emotional input changes. The decision follows the emotion, not the math.
4. The Question That Cuts Through It
How else could this be stated — and would I feel the same way?
If the answer is no — if reframing changes how you feel — then the frame was doing work the facts shouldn’t be doing.
Restate everything in its opposite form before deciding. Survival rate as mortality rate. Gain as loss. Discount as original price restored.
The version that changes your feeling is the version to be suspicious of.
5. The One Thing to Remember
You’re never receiving raw facts. You’re receiving facts in packaging.
The packaging is a choice someone made — consciously or not. Your job is to open it before you decide what’s inside.
