The parents of little Javeayah Harris, 4, apparently killed and disposed of their daughter’s remains before reporting her missing on June 30, setting off a huge and fruitless search in South Carolina to bring her home.

Since being reported missing, law enforcement and first responders have been searching for the little girl.

On July 4, in a statement on Facebook, Aiken County Sheriff Marty Sawyer shared that they believe that the child has been deceased for at least a month.

On Thursday, July 9, the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office announced that some remains belonging to the missing 4-year-old had been found and reportedly had been dissolved by chemicals before being “dumped” in a lake.

DNA was recovered from the remains found that were a biological match to 23‑year‑old Johmarea Harris and 22‑year‑old Michilae Herring, who are charged in the girl’s death.

Johmarea Harris and Michilae Herring are charged with homicide by child abuse in the death of their 4-year-old daughter, Javeayah Harris.

Javeayah was physically abused by her mother and died after both parents did not seek medical attention, the State reported.

According to arrest warrants, this was an act of child abuse and neglect with an “extreme indifference” for human life.

The information stemmed from a confession by both parents.

“There are some very harsh words I would like to use about Michilae and Johnmarea, but I will not do that. … To maintain the integrity of this case,” Aiken County Sheriff Marty Sawyer said. “I will not refer to them as mom and dad … they do not deserve that title.”

The sheriff said that forensic evidence, statements and analysis showed that ***“extensive and deliberate efforts were made to destroy and conceal evidence of Javeayah’s death.”***

The investigation revealed the use of corrosive chemicals and other tools that were used “to accelerate the destruction of her little body,” Sawyer said. “After this was completed, these two individuals poured what remains were left of Javeayah into the Cedar Creek reservoir.”

“It’s unlikely that the entirety of Javeayah’s body or any other remains from this point forward will be recovered,” Sawyer said, “We had all hoped and prayed to find her body, but with the information we’ve uncovered, that’s simply not possible.”

The sheriff described the case as unlike anything he had encountered in nearly four decades in law enforcement.

“I’ve never heard of anything so horrific,” Sawyer said.

They were both denied bond in separate hearings and found ineligible for court-appointed attorneys.
