Inside Liverpool’s music scene-The Argyle Jumpers

On stages adorned in the delicate, golden glow of sunflowers bursts ‘The Argyle Jumpers’ with alternative rock songs that take you on a journey into the mind of front-man and powerhouse vocalist Autumn (Autumn B.Woods). Their work goes about expressing turmoil, anger and a progression through their own experiences and perception of the world around us.

Their live performances are undoubtedly up to a higher standard than most, the lyrics aren’t just sung at the crowd with an expectancy to hear it but it’s a story told through the raw emotion that Autumn feels on stage, a kind of command of the space that shows just how deeply it matters. The set is almost a journey, with a lack of a constant, acts of jumping and headbanging quickly leads into Autumn falling to their knees in an emotional belt. Stable, grungy and deeply textured vocal tones echo with the support of the band, carried alongside a guitar riff that will set each song apart.

To name one song that really defines the path that the band is heading in would be ‘Oxygen’. It’s a powerful opener to the majority of their performances, the song stems from the vocalist’s experiences with mental health facilities, addiction, living on the streets, and fighting for a simplicity and calm. It is a raw message that forces an audience to feel. Autumn’s pursuit for this dream does not stop in the past though, in more recent years they’ve shown up during some of the most challenging times, performed with a forty degree fever, after news of losing a family member and after seizures had caused severe burn out. During a recent show they even collapsed backstage almost the instant the show ended due to just how hard they worked to give their all. This goes to show if you are looking for dedicated you have got it in the Argyle Jumpers. It’s not all tears and pain though, you will have heaps of fun at a gig as the music progressively gets heavier as the set goes on, even sometimes bringing a cover of ‘Bad Romance’ by lady Gaga, leaving the audience full of unwavering smiles.

The future of the band is unclear, for the music industry is unforgiving to those unwilling to bend to the trends of social media, or who don’t have a strong financial net to catch their fall from the very beginning, but alongside drummer Mikey, Autumn is pushing for a strong comeback and exciting entrance into the scene with plenty of music in the works. Liverpool has fun and venues all across the city and incredible talent, if you’re a music lover and local to the North-West do yourself a favour and invest.
