💬“You should charge cheaper. People in Africa can’t afford that.”
If I had a benjie for every time I’ve heard this, I’d offer someone a 100% free service.
I used to worry that my well-meaning spectators and advice-dishers might be right, until I learnt a painful lesson:
🔵 A while back,
I took on a project with a smaller budget, and … despite my efforts, things went really wrong.
Neither I nor the client were satisfied with the outcome, but … I had simply run out of rope.
I couldn’t deliver on the objectives, because the work need more capital and more time than the budget could afford.
Then I fully realised the lesson I’d HEARD countless times,
but this time, I FELT and UNDERSTOOD it through my own frustration and disappointment.
I realised if I charge cheap, for the level of input I give each project,
I can’t deliver what my client actually wants and needs.
The time, resources, sub-contracts and risk required to manufacture useful results and desired outcomes .. just don’t fit a small budget.
I COULD get a quick buck from here and there by dangling a cheap carrot,
but the trail of broken hearts, negative reputation, and resentment I would leave behind .. that’s just a price I’m not willing to pay.
🔵 So I made the obvious choice:
Just charge what it’s worth.
Think about it like this:
If you wouldn’t walk into a restaurant of your own volition and question their prices, why would question the prices of a service provider?
.. esp, one who intends to put money in your own pocket.

Want to understand my reasoning behind this perspective? Keep reading.
Here’s why I believe charging higher service prices is not insane and arguably, more ethical (at least in my case) …

🟢 Reason 1 ›› Arbitrage on Quality
From my 5 years in Germany (particularly from speaking to many MANY seasoned operators at multiple business-themed events in 2025),
I’ve seen how PREMIUM PRICING in ‘first-world’ markets funds PREMIUM DELIVERY.
I value quality over affordability. I love working with people who also value quality over affordability.
Most struggling companies try to squeeze blood from stone with low budgets, then turn around and wonder why deliverables don’t match their expectations.
⭕ I charge 10× more than other designers in my region, because when effort is fueled by bigger budget, it proportionally leads to better quality of results.
› (Budget × Effort) ∝ Quality of Results. › Spend More. Get More.
🟢 Reason 2 ›› Business First, Aesthetics Later
Labels are weird.
I’m a web designer, but I don’t just design websites.
I augment customer acquisition pipelines; but I just happen to focus on the part involving websites.
It’s taken me about 5 years …
- 5 years to build professional design processes.
- 5 years to learn, understand how and WHY websites work in marketing.
- 5 years to become comfortable with business-centric terms and objectives.
- 5 years to start analyzing and improving website conversion metrics as a service.
Lotsa big words right there.
TLDR … it takes a lot of time, conversation, and thinking-work to decide WHY any visual or copywriting element like a button or sentence .. belongs in one specific section of a webpage.
⭕ I charge 10× more than other designers in my region, because I know that Business Outcomes are more important than Subjective Visual Polish.
(I still know how to “make it pop” though.)
🟢 Reason 3 ›› Selective Depth > Scattered Breadth
One of the hardest decisions of my career was to stop being a “slasher”.
You know .. the people who offer A / B / C .. all the way to Z.
Now, I don’t offer ‘everything for anyone’.
I much prefer to go deep on lead acquisition and conversion pipelines in the customer journey, within the context of websites.
Think of it like …
I don’t simply optimize for visual aesthetics like many designers in the wild, but instead, I account for and iron out the obstacles between discovery and booking.
⭕ I charge 10× more than other designers in my region, because I can pave a crystal clear path from first contact to booked call or closed sale.
› First contact → Web Page → Booked Call / Closed Sale
🔵 “What do you offer?”
This is my focus area of expertise now:
- · The visual, communicative, and persuasive elements
- · of a single-page website
- · tailored to one customer avatar
- · seeking out one specific solution (product/service)
- · to solve one core problem.
🔹 I build Conversion-Boosting, Premium Landing Pages. 🔹

🔵 In conclusion …
Businesses who really want to improve lead flow and conversion metrics, don’t just need “a designer”.
They .. you, need a conversion architect.
Someone who understands your technical objectives and your customer’s full journey, from both psycho-emotional AND business-focused angles.
Someone who can pave the path ⭕ from 1st contact → Booked Call / Closed Sale.
🔵 Truth be told …
I’m not fully there yet, but I’m trying to be that guy. One day and project at a time.
That’s why I charge 10× more than other designers in my region.

🔵 Question …
Have you ever been talked into undercharging? By a client .. a friend .. or your own anxiety.
