While New Zealand Suspends Haka Māori MPs, Denmark Extends Ban on Long Face Mantilla

Two countries, one from Oceania and other from Europe, their latest laws reflect similar situations in many other regions and territories.

While New Zealand suspends Haka Maori MPs ( Member of Parliaments) , Denmark extends ban on long face mantilla of women in public places and educational institutions.

Haka is a cultural gesture of expressing resentment in a rough and uncultured manner by the Mario indigenous people.

On June 5, 2025 , BBC shared,

“New Zealand’s parliament has voted to suspend three Māori MPs for their protest haka during a sitting last year.”

Name of the Haka picket MPs are,

Hana-Rawhiti Maipi (who started the traditional dance) and her supporters Rawiri and Debbie.

At the same time in Denmark the government decides to extend a ruling of August 2018, that women and girl students are not allowed to cover their faces in civic spaces and inside learning centers.

On June 5, 2025, South China Morning Post wrote

“Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said on Thursday, her government planned to extend the ban on full-face Islamic veils in public places and apply it to schools and universities as well.”

The decision receives severe criticism from human rights and religious organizations.

Both these issues are found across the globe.

Many a times in different countries political representatives forget decency, significance of the floor and seriousness of their character and personality.

On the same note, while some think wearing long masks to hide face is restriction on women’s rights, another group say the imposed law is snatching women’s freedom of choice what to wear and what not.

With due importance to the sensitivity of the face mantila issue of women, two points leaning toward defending the ban -

• Many women are either habituated or suppressed that never express their true feeling regarding covering their face.

• Sometimes might be used by felons to commit crime and escape.

The mature mindset makes aware that women’s independence is neither taking off clothes nor covering them with a sack.

From another point of view, in a cold climate men and women all cover themselves top to bottom. Here there is no imposition of asymmetrical traditions but the necessity.

Anyway, both New Zealand and Denmark have taken firm decisions in both cases of Haka parliamentarians and forbidding face mantila.
