When to Open and Close Cash-Secured Puts (Without Bleeding Your Portfolio Dry)
by Peter Prusinowski aka Peter Pru
Most people who sell options know the mechanics of a cash-secured put. But the real challenge isn’t in placing the trade — it’s in knowing when to get in, and more importantly, when to get out. That’s where most traders leave money on the table or get stuck with dead collateral.
In today’s breakdown, I’m going to walk you through my exact process for timing cash-secured puts — using live trades from my public portfolio.
Why Timing Actually Matters
Here’s the truth: you don’t have to wait for a perfect setup if you already believe in the stock and would gladly own 100 shares today. But if you want to maximize ROI on your collateral, patience pays.
I lean on simple tools like Bollinger Bands. When a stock is pressing the lower band, I look for put opportunities. When it’s at the top band, I’m thinking covered calls. No magic indicators. No Wall Street voodoo. Just logic and discipline.
The Power of Closing Early
A big mistake I see is traders letting every CSP ride until expiration. That ties up capital for weeks — sometimes months — when you could free it up early and redeploy.
In my portfolio this week, I closed out positions in Fiverr and Ford ahead of schedule. That move freed up over $3,000 of collateral that would’ve been sitting there for weeks. Instead of letting it rot, I was able to push it straight into a new setup with Kraft Heinz.
That’s the difference between sitting on dead money and keeping your portfolio alive.
My Simple Checklist Before Selling a CSP
I don’t complicate this. Before I sell any CSP, I run through:
- Would I actually own 100 shares of this stock right now?
- What’s my ROI on collateral if this trade fills?
- Is this stock near the bottom of its Bollinger Band (oversold territory)?
- How long am I willing to tie up this cash — 28 days max, or longer?
If all four check out, I sell. If they don’t, I pass. No forcing trades.
The Takeaway
Cash-secured puts are one of the simplest income strategies in the market — but only if you know when to play offense and when to step aside. Opening CSPs when a stock is oversold, and closing early when capital is better used elsewhere, keeps the wheel spinning without unnecessary drag.
In my world, it’s always: sell options, collect premiums, repeat.
