There’s no other way but to live together

My design philosophy and thoughts are coming together after reading books and articles and working on projects, and I want to share them on Medium.

The Need for Balance We often find ourselves balancing personal freedom and our responsibility to the community. Neither is more important than the other — both are essential. As a designer, I find this sense of balance crucial. When individual freedom clashes with collective values, it’s through dialogue that we can respect and understand each other’s perspectives.

Not everyone has to be friends or family, but it’s important to approach others with the same understanding we wish to receive. Neighbors aren’t defined by gender, identity, appearance, or values — but by their actions. While we can’t save each other, we can at least ensure we don’t contribute to someone else’s suffering. This idea brings me back to the core of design. Design is like a bridge that connects people, reflecting their unique experiences and voices.

I’m fascinated by the things that connect us all. Through design, I aim to create connections that otherwise wouldn’t have existed, providing a space where each voice is respected. It’s about finding ways to balance different interests while ensuring individual rights and values are preserved.

A Shift in Perspective They say that when your perspective shifts, the landscape you see changes, too. It reminds us that what we see may not be the absolute truth. That’s why I place a lot of value on approaching other people’s opinions with flexibility and a sense of humor. In design, I think this attitude plays a huge role. I try not to take problems too seriously and maintain a sense of humor and openness. Humor often provides unexpected solutions, easing tension and creating more natural communication with users. This flexibility leads to better, more human-centered design. I genuinely believe approaching design with a light heart and humor helps create more effective solutions. Change is hard, especially when people with differing opinions avoid dialogue. Real change begins with conversations, not conflict. We need to remember our shared values and respect each other’s perspectives. In this sense, design plays an important role. Design creates pathways for communication, offering users a platform where their voices can be heard, leading to a better experience.

There are two ways to resolve conflict: stubbornly defending our own position and seeking to understand and persuade each other. The latter is more complex, but real change happens through this process. Just design is about finding solutions that balance various interests and perspectives while fostering empathy.

Overcoming Prejudice and Coexisting To overcome prejudice, we first need to understand and acknowledge its roots. Like a healer ensuring their patient doesn’t lose hope, we must create spaces where even those who feel despair can belong. The responsibility of design isn’t just about creating beauty — it’s about designing spaces where everyone can coexist.

Ultimately, design is a powerful tool for resolving conflict and overcoming prejudice. It helps us move toward a world where we can live together more harmoniously.

Our society is losing the ability to see others — especially those we find hard to accept — as equals. We’re too stressed and rushed, making creating a world without discrimination harder. If we want inclusive design, we must find ways to slow down and regain the space to think and connect.

Sometimes, the question “Why should I have to put up with them?” pops into our minds. However, as designers, we aim to create spaces and systems where everyone can coexist. This effort is the foundation of a society where everyone is respected and understood.

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about kindness. It’s not about following rules but designing to encourage dialogue and foster connection. Design grounded in understanding and empathy is the path toward a better society. We grow and learn through our relationships with others; through these connections, we find the strength and love to build a more equal world. And I want to hear more stories from those who’ve paved the way for a more inclusive society.
