If politics isn’t proof enough of metastasising craziness, this might do it. Queues forming at dawn, snaking around the block as hundreds of New Yorkers line up to sink their teeth into the latest taste sensation — an $11 cake in a cup.
The Dot Cake. A confection that even those who tried it agree tastes pretty much like a cake mix, or something you could stick in your microwave at home. Check whether a half empty jar of ancient sprinkles still lurks in the dark recesses of your pantry shelf, you’ll need those too. Sprinkles are part of the appeal. But be warned, it won’t be the real Dot Cake experience.
Those who manage to acquire one are often eager to recreate what has become a dotcake cliché: running a spoon over the hard, sprinkle-paved surface, oohing at the sound, then digging into the individually-portioned desserts, which come in vanilla, chocolate, red velvet, vanilla chocolate chip, and funfetti flavors. I don’t get it. I’ve never wanted anything enough — from Krispy Kreme doughnuts to the latest iPhone — that I’d stand in line for hours. Maybe it’s age, I don’t know, but even in my carefree and irresponsible younger days, when I did many idiotic things, many, I don’t think a Dot Cake would have tempted me to join a queue.
Back then though, in the dark ages of my youth, there was no internet, no social media, no TikTok to stir up incipient craziness. Not like now, when the most ridiculous, eye rolling things go viral — probably for just that reason.
An awkward segue from Dot Cakes, I know, but here’s an example from Euro News about the latest piece of eyerolling artwork from America’s crackpot commander in chief . . .

Oh wait . . . that’s fake news. He’s been many other things — a Pope, a King, Superman, but not this. So what to believe? Is the Dot Cake mania fake too? No, that’s true. Google Dot Cakes. Social media is full of it, Dot Cakes, I mean. It’s craziness with rainbow sprinkles.
Anyone old enough to remember Dr. Demento? They’re coming to take me away, ha-haaa!! They’re coming to take me away, ho-ho, hee-hee, ha-haaa.
Maybe a Dot Cake might help.
