From MVPs to Adaptive UI: How Synheart Builds Interfaces That Respect Human State

From MVPs to Models Part II

In our very first blog — and the first version of the From MVPs to Models series — we explored RLHHF.

The idea behind RLHHF is to move beyond learning solely from what humans say, and instead consider how the human body responds during interaction — using physiological and behavioral signals as contextual feedback.

Over the past few months, our focus shifted to making this possible by building something more foundational: the infrastructure for human state.

That meant designing privacy-first, local-first, high-performance systems that allow AI to learn from human signals — both **biosignals and [behavioral](https://synheart.ai/research/synheart-behavior) signals** — without compromising trust.

This work led to an end-to-end infrastructure to collect, compute, and visualize Human State Interface (HSI) data.

We open-sourced the core building blocks of HSI — so teams can inspect, extend, and trust the system end to end.

And yesterday, we pre-launched **Platform by Synheart**: the layer that brings these pieces together so teams can build, observe, and iterate on human-state–aware systems.

As we studied **emotion**, it became clear it couldn’t be treated in isolation.

It naturally expanded into **focus, cognition, and human state** more broadly.

And as we studied the heart, we moved beyond individual signals — exploring its kinematic and behavioral patterns, and how they interact with the rest of the human system. We expanded beyond one signal and began working with many — biosignals and behavioral signals together — all in service of the HEART.

(And yes — Synheart comes from “Sync Your Heart with your Mind ..”. It’s about coherence.)

Together, this pushed us toward something bigger.

Over time, we introduced an infrastructure to process human state holistically, and formalized it as HSI 1.0 (Human State Interface) — a way to represent human state using multiple signals, not a single label.

Today, we’re using HSI as an interface layer for training and grounding **LLMs — not to define how humans feel, but to help systems understand context**.

By incorporating human state signals into the interaction loop, we aim to make communication between humans and computers more adaptive, timely, and human-aware — without sacrificing privacy or control.

HSI allows models to respond not just to what is said, but to when and how it’s said — grounding intelligence in real human context rather than assumptions.

In this series, we’ll explore what Human State Interfaces (HSI) enable beyond language models — specifically in UI and UX.

We’ll start with how Synheart is building adaptive user interfaces: interfaces that respond to human state in real time, using signals rather than assumptions.

This work builds on the same foundations we discussed in How Synheart Is Building Emotionally Intelligent AI — but shifts the focus from models to experience.

In the next part of this series, we’ll build an MVP to show what adaptive UI looks like in practice.

Why the next generation of interfaces won’t try to understand you — they’ll support you.

Software has become incredibly powerful.

It can predict, personalize, optimize, and automate. Yet despite all this intelligence, many interfaces still feel… exhausting.

Too many choices when you’re already overloaded.

Notifications that interrupt at the worst possible time.

Help that shows up too early, too late, or not at all.

At Synheart, we believe the problem isn’t a lack of intelligence.

It’s a lack of consideration.

That belief led us to a simple question:

What if software adapted to your state — quietly, respectfully, and without making assumptions about who you are or how you feel?

This is the idea behind adaptive UI powered by Human State Interface (HSI).

WHAT IS UI/UX?

UI/UX is about how humans experience and interact with a system.

What Is UI?

UI (User Interface) is what you see and interact with.

It includes:

  • Screens and layouts
  • Buttons, sliders, text, colors
  • Icons, typography, spacing
  • Visual feedback (loading, errors, states)

UI answers:

What does the interface look like right now?

What Is UX?

UX (User Experience) is how it feels to use the system over time.

It includes:

  • How easy or frustrating things are
  • Whether actions feel intuitive
  • Timing and flow between steps
  • Clarity, feedback, and trust
  • How the system responds to mistakes or uncertainty

UX answers:

How does this interaction feel to the human?

UI vs UX

If you open an app:

  • UI is the button you tap
  • UX is whether tapping that button feels smooth, predictable, and satisfying

A beautiful UI can still have bad UX.

Great UX often looks simple.

What we mean by “adaptive UI” (and what we don’t)

When people hear adaptive UI, they often think of:

  • personalization settings
  • themes and layouts
  • interfaces that constantly change
  • or AI systems that claim to know how you feel

That’s not what we’re building.

Our definition is much narrower — and much more human.

Adaptive UI is an interface that removes friction at the exact moment you would have felt it.

  • No announcements.
  • No emotion labels.
  • No surprises.
  • Just support, when it matters.

The moment that makes people stop

We measure success with a single reaction.

Not “wow.”

Not “cool.”

But:

“Oh… that was easier.”

That quiet pause — when the interface feels like it helped instead of demanded — is what we call a whoa moment.

It’s subtle by design.

And it’s surprisingly rare in software today.

Why current interfaces fall short

Most applications behave the same way, no matter the moment.

Whether you’re focused or distracted.

Rested or exhausted.

Calm or rushed.

The interface doesn’t care.

Developers try to compensate with:

  • manual modes
  • static preferences
  • schedules
  • or opaque personalization algorithms

But human state is dynamic.

And forcing people to manage software behavior manually defeats the purpose.

A different approach: Human State Interface (HSI)

HSI doesn’t try to guess your emotions.

Instead, it works with measurable, interpretable signals, such as:

  • cognitive load
  • attention capacity
  • readiness and fatigue
  • interaction patterns (like hesitation or backtracking)

These signals can come from:

  • wearables
  • device context
  • on-device behavioral dynamics

Crucially:

  • processing happens locally
  • confidence is explicit
  • users stay in control

HSI provides signals, not judgments.

How adaptive UI actually works

To keep things safe and predictable, we separate intelligence from interface.

In practice, the system works like this:

  1. Signals are collected and interpreted locally
  2. A policy layer decides what the interface is allowed to do
  3. The UI adapts only within those boundaries

This means:

  • the UI never reacts directly to raw data
  • adaptations are stable, not chaotic
  • behavior can be explained and overridden

There’s NO MAGIC .

Just carefully designed rules.

Three ways adaptive UI helps — without getting in the way

1. Simplifying when things get heavy

When cognitive load increases, the interface quietly does less:

  • fewer visible options
  • clearer primary actions
  • reduced motion

Nothing announces itself.

The task just feels easier.

2. Protecting focus when it matters

When attention is high, the interface steps back:

  • interruptions are deferred
  • layouts stop shifting
  • prompts wait their turn

Later, you might see:

“3 interruptions were delayed while you were focused.”

No pressure.

Just respect.

3. Explaining itself — only if you ask

Every adaptation can be inspected:

  • what changed
  • why it changed (at a high level)
  • how confident the system was

No biometric readouts.

No labels.

No judgement.

Transparency builds trust.

Why this matters

Software shapes how we think, work, and rest.

When interfaces ignore human limits, they quietly increase stress.

When they respect those limits, they do the opposite.

Adaptive UI isn’t about making software smarter.

It’s about making it more considerate.

What we’re building next

We’re currently building a small, focused application to validate these ideas in the real world.

But a simple experience designed to answer one question:

Does this actually feel better to use?

Yes ofc! the same adaptive layer will become available to developers through SDKs — so others can build interfaces that support people, not overwhelm them.

TL;DR

Traditional UI/UX is static:

  • Same interface for everyone
  • Same timing, same density, same feedback

With Human State Interfaces (HSI), UI/UX becomes adaptive:

  • UI changes based on human state
  • UX responds to focus, load, or recovery
  • Interfaces adapt when and how they interact

In other words:

HSI turns UI/UX from fixed layouts into responsive experiences.

A quieter future for software

The best interfaces don’t demand attention.

They earn trust.

Adaptive UI, done right, feels less like artificial intelligence — and more like good manners.
