I Did Everything Right and Still Got Fired

Their lawyer tried to silence me, but my story deserves to be heard.

“Today will be your last day with us. Thank you for everything. Goodbye,” were the last words I heard my manager say before quickly hopping off the Google Meets call with me and the head of HR.

“What? Wait what?” was all I could say.

It felt like someone had taken a knife and stabbed me.

“Someone from IT will be reaching out so you can return your laptop, and I’ll be sending you COBRA information so you can continue your health insurance on your own terms. Do you have any questions?” HR asked calmly.

“I don’t understand… what did I do?”

“This has nothing to do with anything you did or your work performance,” she said. “We’re just going in a different direction.” Tears filled my eyes. I was too stunned to speak.

“I loved this job,” I whispered. “I don’t understand.”

The Shock That Doesn’t Go Away

I never had a write-up. Never had a warning. I even had meetings scheduled that week for projects I was actively leading. I had been praised, thanked, and even told I was being considered for a promotion.

Nothing could have prepared me for that call.

It wasn’t due to budget cuts. My position wasn’t eliminated. Something didn’t add up. I reached out to HR again, hoping for a real explanation. “That’s all I’m able to say,” she replied.

I was spiralling.

I was left with nothing but questions. I tried asking two coworkers if they knew anything, no response. Silence where there used to be friendship.

In my confusion, I shared my story on TikTok. That post eventually led to a call from their lawyer who I think was just trying to silence me and told me the “real” reason was “relationship conflict.” Something I’d never heard of, never been spoken to about, and wasn’t allowed to ask more about.

If the “relationship conflict” was really the issue, why didn’t they talk to me about it prior? Why didn’t they give me a chance to fix it? I wish they had given me the opportunity to improve because without that kind of transparency, I’ll never be aware of what I was supposedly doing to cause this “conflict,” and I can’t grow from it.

Later, when I vented to a friend who also worked there, I received a cease and desist. For simply asking why.

This makes me believe that the reason was fabricated to silence me or maybe it was as shallow as they just didn’t like me. They were firing someone almost every month so it’s easy to believe that if they didn’t like you, they simply let you go.

“It’s Just How Corporate America Is.”

“This happens to everyone.”

“Move on.”

“At-will employment exists.”

Those were some of the responses after my LinkedIn post gained attention. Others told me to delete it because it will ruin the chances of me finding another job.

But even more people reached out privately, thanking me for my honesty. For being brave enough to say what they were too afraid to. For being a voice for those who’ve experienced the same confusion, pain, and silence.

And that’s when I realized something:

Nothing will change if no one says anything.

I’m not fighting a legal battle. I’m not trying to abolish at-will employment. I’m simply asking for empathy.

Just because something is legal doesn’t make it right.

Just because “that’s how corporate America is” doesn’t mean it should stay that way.

This wasn’t just a friendship or a hobby they ended, this was my livelihood. My stability. My life. I guess you can lose sight of that when you’re a business owner who never has to worry about money.

The Human Cost

Most of us can’t afford to lose our jobs overnight. We don’t have savings that stretch for months. When we get let go, it’s not just financial, it’s emotional. It’s the loss of trust, of confidence, of identity. It’s waking up every day wondering why you weren’t enough when, deep down, you know you did everything right. It’s watching your coworkers, the ones in the same position, being reassured that their jobs are safe. It’s the countless hours you poured into a company, sacrificing time with family and friends, only to be cut off like you never mattered.

I didn’t get a call from the CEO who made the decision.

I didn’t get an apology.

I didn’t get severance.

I got denied unemployment.

Meanwhile, the people who made the decision continue their workdays unaffected, while I’m left trying to rebuild my life and my faith in people. This isn’t just about me. It’s about a system that strips people of dignity under the guise of “business decisions.”

Choosing Honesty Over Fear

For a moment, I did think about deleting my post. I thought about staying quiet. But then I remembered, silence protects systems, not people. I don’t want to work for a company that’s afraid of honesty. I want to work for one that values it.

Maybe my story won’t change the world.

But maybe it’ll start a conversation that does.

It’s Time for Change

We’ve all heard it: “That’s just how things go.”

But sometimes, one person saying something can make life better for everyone. Humans fear change, myself included. But after experiencing this kind of gut punch, I fear something else more: things never changing at all.

Big companies with endless resources should be capable of compassion. They should be capable of transparency. Of treating people like humans, not numbers. Remote work gave us a taste of balance but even that balance often comes chained to a laptop, afraid to step away, afraid to be replaced.

I did everything right. And I still got fired.

That’s not something I should be ashamed of, it’s something we should be talking about. Because if no one says anything, nothing will ever change.

Change starts with one voice.

Maybe this time, it’s mine.
