6 STEPS TO EASY NICHE RESEARCH FOR KDP LOW CONTENT PUBLISHING
November 22, 2021
First, I wanted to say thanks for reading this blog and I welcome you to join my Facebook group **KDP For Beginners — Your Questions Answered **where I strive to help KDP low content beginners get started. I am also an affiliate for some of the products I recommend but these are products I use myself and believe in. Click on any underlined item to go to their sites.
I’ve been seeing a lot of questions about niches lately, so I thought I would start there since making money has something to do with this topic. Keep in mind all the advice I offer is from my own experience which included a lot of trial and error, also feel free to ask any additional questions on the KDP For Beginners group page.
So simply a niche is an untapped or barely touched market. The subject of niches is a popular one because if you can find one that’s not oversaturated and has a lot of traffic, then your book will sell. Since there is high competition for niches, finding them and producing books quickly is the goal, so I thought I would start with some tools to help you find niches faster. Okay, so let’s get to it.
TOOLS TO CONSIDER:
HELIUM 10 free — Gives you the ability to try everything for free for 30 days and gives you 2 free searches a day of Magnet² which gives you relevant keywords unfortunately the free version only lets you see the first 50 words. Cerebro also gives you 2 free searches a day and is a reverse ASIN lookup. It allows you to look at the keywords another book has attached to it but sadly you can only see 50 results.
KDP SEO BOT — Free plug-in that comes with a Competitive Analyzer and Niche Predictor, the words put in Niche Predictor must be very vague to work properly, but it can still give you some good ideas. I would check the results in amazon to make sure the information is useful. I have used the deep SEO scan, but it gives you a lot of useless words.
**KDP SPY/KDP ROCKET **— One payment only, I am a fan of KDP Rocket because it gives you Keyword Search, Competition Analyzer, Category Search (allows you to see AMS categories and sub-categories), and AMS Keyword Search. KDP Spy gives you Search and Keywords, it’s helpful because you can use it after you enter a word on amazon and it gives you all the information on that page, not bad when you want to see what the books, prices, publish dates, sales, etc. are without scrolling. Keyword gives you AMS and Google search volumes, which is good for advertising and allows you to judge whether a keyword is worth investing in.
**BOOKBOLT** — Monthly or yearly subscriptions, with a 3-day free trial. This is a useful site. This one not only gives you keyword information but also includes a great selection of interiors ready to be downloaded in PDF form, a puzzle creator with many options, and the ability to produce covers. Since this article is about niches, I will concentrate on research functions only but it’s worth a look. You can search products by keyword, look up sellers by name, see what’s trending with Cloud, (I use this to see what’s popular in real time) look up a book by ASIN in Book Scout, Keyword Search for competition and KDP Categories. To be honest the KDP Category search isn’t very good, but the other features supply you with invaluable information.
If you are on a tight budget and want to find niches without any assistance, I would first think of what I wanted to create. I think your dedication to a topic could make the difference in sales. So, let’s say I want to make a “cat journal” I would go online and in google do a search for “types of cats”, when I found a breed, I would go to amazon and complete the following steps:
1. Type “Siamese cat notebook” (remember to vary the title like “Siamese cat journal” or “Siamese diary”, you’d be surprised what you can find) into the search bar and see how many search results (less is better) comes up and see what related searches come up (you might find something interesting)
2. See how many sponsored ads there are (if there are 20 sponsored ads you won’t ever be on top of the page)
3. See what the BSR’s are, the lower the better. High means no one is interested but it doesn’t necessarily mean the book isn’t worth trying. Do you think this niche has a chance to blow up? Its free to make books so all you lose is time.
4. What do the top BSR notebooks have in common? Are they the same color? Same fonts? All use photos? Are they glossy or matte? What can you do to make yours different? If they’re all black, why not pink? It might be time to hit the amazon search bar again to see what a new search pulls up for “pink Siamese notebook”, you just might have found a niche. I might also look to see what others have bought from this person. Another option is checking out reviews to see if there is anything you can provide that the book might be missing.
5. Write all your ideas down for further research, you might want to also write down the search amounts, remember you will still need keywords for when you publish and if you decide to advertise and don’t forget a title is more effective if you use low competition keywords in them.
6. The last step is to refine you accumulated keyword list. Keep them all but you will soon see some have more potential than others, these will turn into you title, subtitle and apart of you 7 keyword slots.
That’s the basics of niche research, I encourage you to post your additional questions in the group chat, and I will be happy to answer. There are no dumb questions.
BONUS:
I wanted to share my go to tool for creating books and content. I am not a wiz at illustrator or vector programs, so I use CANVA and with the pro license you no longer have to worry about copyright issues which allows you to focus on creating. It also saves your previous templates so making new books is a snap. They also have free options available.
