How to Replace Real Debrid with TorBox in Stremio and Torrentio

Something broke in mid-May 2026 and the Stremio community noticed it fast.

People opened their apps expecting a normal Tuesday night. Instead they got walls of red errors. The message was always some version of this:

“File was removed from debrid service due to copyright infringement”

No warning. No email from Real Debrid. No explanation anywhere on their site. Just broken streams, missing links, and a Reddit thread that hit 500 comments in about six hours.

I spent two days trying to fix it before I accepted what was actually happening. This article is what I wish someone had handed me on day one.

What Actually Happened to Real Debrid

Real Debrid is a French company. That matters more than most people realized.

Around May 10th, 2026, they quietly pushed a keyword filter onto their cached torrent library. The filter works by scanning filenames. If a torrent’s filename contains certain strings, it gets blocked automatically and returns error code 35, also written as infringing_file. No human reviews these. No appeals process. The file just stops working.

The strings being caught include things like WEB-DL, WEBRip, AMZN, NF, CR, YTS, and RARBG. If you know anything about how torrents are named, you already see the problem. WEB-DL is basically the standard format for anything ripped from a streaming service. It covers the majority of TV shows and a huge portion of movies that come out every week.

One person tested about 165 current releases against the filter and found roughly 34% blocked. People with large libraries reported losing more than half their cached content overnight.

Real Debrid’s official response pointed to EU Digital Services Act compliance and a Paris Court of Appeal ruling from March 2026. French copyright enforcement groups submitted keyword lists under Article 16 of the DSA and Real Debrid acted on them. Whether they had a choice in that or not, the result is the same. The filter is live. It covers the most common release formats. And there is nothing in their roadmap suggesting it gets walked back.

They also keep user logs for up to a year under French law and will share them under subpoena. That came up in a separate thread a few months back about account bans, and it stuck with me. The combination of a broken product and active logging is not great.

Why TorBox Is the Replacement Most People Landed On

TorBox does the same thing Real Debrid does at the base level. It downloads torrents on its own servers and gives you a fast streaming link. You never connect to a torrent swarm directly. You get a clean HTTPS URL and your content plays at full speed.

The difference right now is that TorBox has no keyword filter. WEB-DL works. WEBRip works. AMZN and NF-tagged releases work. The content that broke on Real Debrid loads fine.

There are a few other differences that matter depending on how you use your setup.

Real Debrid locks accounts if you stream from more than one IP. TorBox does not care. You can use it at home, on your phone, through a VPN, all at once. This alone was a dealbreaker for a lot of people, especially anyone who travels or shares a setup with someone else in the house. RD has also been issuing account warnings more aggressively for anything that looks like sharing. TorBox explicitly allows household sharing, it’s not a grey area.

The transparent API thing is subtle but you feel it right away. TorBox tells Stremio addons exactly which files are cached. Real Debrid approximates this, which is why you get so many sources that look like they’ll work, start buffering, and then die. With TorBox the addon knows upfront. You click fewer dead links.

Also worth knowing: TorBox keeps no user logs. Given that RD retains yours for up to a year and hands them over under subpoena, this is not a small detail.

Step by Step: How to Replace Real Debrid with TorBox

Step 1: Create Your TorBox Account

Go to torbox.app and sign up. The signup is straightforward. You can register anonymously if you want, they don’t require real details.

Once you’re in, pick a plan. The Essential plan at around $3/month is what most people need. It covers everything in this guide.

One thing: if you sign up through a referral link you get extra days added to your plan on purchase. 7 bonus days per month purchased. So if you buy a 3-month plan you get 21 extra days on top of that. The link above already has this applied.

Step 2: Get Your TorBox API Key

Log into your TorBox account. Go to Settings and scroll down until you see the API Key section. Copy that string of characters and keep it somewhere you can paste from. You’ll need it in the next step.

Keep this key private. Anyone who has it can use your account.

Step 3: Reconfigure Torrentio

This is where you swap out Real Debrid for TorBox. You do not need to uninstall anything from Stremio first. You just reconfigure the addon and reinstall it.

Open a browser and go to **torrentio.strem.fun**

You’ll see the configuration page. Find the “Debrid provider” dropdown. It currently probably says Real-Debrid. Click it and change it to TorBox.

A new field will appear below it asking for your TorBox API key. Paste the key you copied in Step 2.

While you’re here, two optional settings I recommend:

• Check “Don’t show download to Debrid links” — this removes the extra download buttons from your stream list and keeps things clean
• Set stream sorting to “By quality then seeders” — this puts the best sources at the top automatically

Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Install.

Stremio should open automatically and show an install confirmation popup. Click Install there too.

That’s it. Your existing Torrentio addon in Stremio is now replaced with the new TorBox configuration.

If Stremio doesn’t open automatically: right-click the Install button, copy the link, open Stremio, go to Settings, then Addons, then Add Addon, and paste the URL into the field.

Step 4: Test It

Search for any TV show or movie in Stremio. Click into it and open the streams. You should see TorBox-powered sources appearing now. They’ll be labeled with TorBox or the quality tag like 1080p WEB-DL.

Pick one and hit play. If it starts immediately without buffering, the setup worked.

If you’re used to dealing with RD errors lately, this is going to feel different. WEB-DL sources show up. They play. That’s kind of the whole point.

If You Use Comet Instead of Torrentio

Comet is another popular Stremio addon and the process is basically the same.

Go to the Comet configuration page (the URL depends on whether you’re using a self-hosted or public instance, but the most common public one is comet.elfhosted.com or the Comet Stremio addon page).

In the configuration, find the debrid provider section and select TorBox. Paste your API key. Install. Done.

Comet has one advantage over Torrentio worth mentioning: it does a better job filtering out dead sources before they show up in your list. So if you’re someone who was constantly frustrated by clicking sources that never load, Comet might be worth trying alongside or instead of Torrentio.

What About Your Old Real Debrid Subscription

If you paid for a Real Debrid subscription that hasn’t expired yet, you can keep using it for content that still works, mainly BluRay and REMUX releases, or older content that doesn’t have the blocked filename tags. But for anything recent or TV-heavy, TorBox is going to give you a much better experience right now.

You can technically run both at the same time in Torrentio by configuring two separate addon instances, one for each provider. Torrentio lets you install multiple configurations. Just go through the setup process twice with different providers and both will show up in your stream list.

Android TV and Firestick

If you’re running Stremio on Android TV or a Firestick, you don’t need to do anything on the TV itself once you’ve set up the addon elsewhere.

Install Stremio on your TV from the Play Store or sideload it if you’re on a Firestick. Log into your Stremio account. Then on a phone or computer, go to web.stremio.com, log in, and install the reconfigured Torrentio addon there. Stremio syncs addons to every device on your account automatically. Give it a minute and the TorBox addon will appear on your TV without you touching the remote.
