How isolation quietly changes people

leaving space in your heart for light to return

There is a difference between having a circle and having boundaries around yourself. When you have a circle, it means you have certain criteria for everyone to enter in it, so whenever someone fulfil that criteria he/she automatically becomes part of your circle. But having walls all around is totally different, you keep caging yourself inside that walls even if your mind or body start rotting. You don’t let someone get in, nor can you get out of it. The most you can do is just lean back on that wall and listen to what the other person is saying behind the wall.

And the strange thing about walls is that after some time, they stop feeling like prisons and start feeling like home. You decorate your loneliness, give names to your silence, and convince yourself that isolation is peace. You become so used to surviving alone that even genuine care starts feeling unfamiliar. Every knock on the wall sounds suspicious. Every kind voice feels temporary. So instead of opening the door, you sit quietly and hope they understand your silence without ever hearing your words.

Many people are terrified of being vulnerable enough to recover rather than of getting harmed again. Because healing requires trust, and trust feels dangerous after disappointment has lived inside you for too long. So people choose distance. They reply late. They stop explaining themselves. They slowly disappear from places where they once laughed loudly. And one day they wake up realizing they have become strangers even to themselves.

A few months ago, I allowed someone to step close enough to hear my thoughts more clearly. Their presence felt like sunlight entering an abandoned place. For a little while, everything inside me felt less silent. But people are temporary sometimes, and not every voice echoes forever. When the connection faded, I found myself standing in front of those same emotional ruins once again, trying to rebuild what I had almost abandoned.

There are nights when you sit quietly and wonder whether becoming distant was a choice or just a habit formed from disappointments. You replay old conversations in your head, not because you miss the people, but because you miss the version of yourself that existed around them. The version that still trusted easily, laughed freely, and did not overthink every attachment like it was another future wound waiting to happen.

But if creating a bigger barriers after each sorrow isn’t the key to healing. Maybe it is about learning which doors deserve to remain open and which ones should stay closed. Possibly strength is not becoming emotionless. Maybe strength is allowing yourself to feel deeply without letting pain turn you into someone unreachable.

Because the truth is, humans are not built to survive entirely alone. Even the strongest people need softness somewhere in their lives. A voice that feels safe. A presence that quiets the noise inside their mind. Someone who reminds them that not every connection is temporary and not every goodbye is permanent.

So if life disappoints you, do not disappear completely inside yourself. Leave some space for light to enter. Leave some space for people who genuinely care. Not everyone arrives to destroy you. Apparently some people come to remind you that living and surviving are two different things.
