It started with a casual hallway conversation.

Late February, I was visiting the Microsoft campus in Redmond, Washington. Between meetings, a colleague said something that would quietly reshape my commutes for the next two months:

“Have you listened to Acquired? It’s a Seattle based podcast. You’d love it.”

I pulled it up that evening. Episode 1. Hit play.

Two months and 25 episodes later, I’m writing this as a thoroughly converted fan. And if you haven’t listened yet — you need to.

My New Driving Ritual

Here’s the thing about Acquired: those 20–30 minute car rides that used to feel like dead time? Now they’re the highlight of my day.

I get in the car, hit play, and suddenly I’m learning how YouTube pivoted from a video dating site, or how Steve Jobs rebuilt himself at NeXT, or why Bob Iger bet Disney’s future on Pixar. By the time I park, I’m genuinely energized. Not drained from traffic — energized.

There’s something magical about starting your day with stories of people who built extraordinary things from nothing. It puts your own challenges in perspective. If Chad Hurley could pivot a failed dating site into YouTube, maybe my 9am meeting isn’t that daunting after all.

What Is Acquired?

Acquired.fm is a podcast by Ben Gilbert and David Rosenthal that tells the stories behind the world’s greatest companies and acquisitions. Based right here in Seattle, these two do something rare: they combine the depth of a business school case study with the storytelling of a great documentary. Each episode is around an hour logn, but every minute is worth it.

Two Stories in One

What I love most about Acquired is that every episode is really two stories woven together:

The founding story— how these companies got started. These are so inspiring and intriguing. The scrappy beginnings. The near-death moments. The pivots no one saw coming. Instagram was a check-in app called Burbn. Android was a camera operating system. YouTube was… a video dating site? These origin stories are humbling reminders that nothing we take for granted today was ever inevitable.

The acquisition story— and then, just when you think you know where it’s going, the acquisition chapters blow your mind even more. The negotiations. The personalities. The gut calls made by leaders who saw potential where others saw risk. Google buying Android for $50M. Facebook acquiring Instagram for $1B (and everyone calling it crazy). Disney paying $7.4B for Pixar. These aren’t just business deals — they’re turning points in tech history.

The Episodes That Stuck With Me

Out of 25 episodes, a few have stayed with me in a way that goes beyond entertainment:

🏰 Disney’s Acquisitions — Pixar & Lucasfilm

The Disney episodes were personal. I’d read Bob Iger’s memoir “The Ride of a Lifetime”, so hearing the Acquired version was like watching the movie after reading the book. The courage it took to acquire Pixar — to bet that creative independence was worth more than corporate control — is a masterclass in leadership.

And Lucasfilm? Buying the legacy of George Lucas, the weight of Star Wars, the expectation of billions of fans? Iger didn’t just buy companies. He bought cultures. And he had the wisdom to let them stay who they were.

💻 NeXT — The Wilderness Years of Steve Jobs

This one hit differently. We all know the Apple comeback story. But the NeXT episode peels back the layers on Jobs during his years in the wilderness — building something that most people thought was a failure, but that quietly laid the foundation for everything Apple would become.

Every moment of frustration, every bold bet, every time Jobs inspired the people around him even when the odds were against him. It’s a reminder that the path to greatness is rarely a straight line.

📱 YouTube, Android, Instagram — The Humbling Starts

These episodes blew my mind. Not because of what these products became — we all know that. But because of what they were at the beginning.

YouTube started as a video dating site. Android was a camera operating system. Instagram was a messy check-in app called Burbn.

These are products that billions of people use every single day without a second thought. And each one started as a tiny, uncertain bet by a handful of people in a room. The acquisitions that brought them into Google and Facebook weren’t obvious at the time. They were gut calls by leaders who saw potential where others saw risk.

Fascinating. Humbling. Super inspiring.

Why This Podcast Matters

In a world of 15-second reels and hot takes, Acquired is the opposite. It asks you to slow down. To sit with a story for a few hours. To understand the why behind the what.

And in doing so, it teaches you things no business school can:

• Leadership is about bets — every acquisition was a risk someone had the conviction to take
• Nothing is inevitable in hindsight— the products we take for granted today were once someone’s wild experiment
• Great stories compound — the more episodes you listen to, the more connections you see across tech history
• Timing matters more than talent — many of these companies succeeded because of when, not just what

My Challenge to You

If you haven’t started Acquired, here’s my recommendation: start from Episode 1. Don’t skip. Don’t jump to the “big” episodes. The early ones set the context. They build the vocabulary. And honestly, they’re just as good.

25 episodes. Less than 2 months. And I’ve loved every minute.

The stories of the companies we admire are richer, messier, and more human than we think. And somewhere in those stories, there’s a lesson for whatever you’re building right now.
