Getting Started on the KAPS App for Cashless Parking in Kenya

If you have ever driven into a parking lot, dug through your pockets for exact change, or panicked because you lost your parking ticket, this article is for you. KAPS is here to make parking in Kenya as simple as possible. No cash. No tickets. No stress.

This guide walks you through everything you need to get started on the KAPS app, from downloading it all the way to paying for parking.

What is the KAPS App?

The KAPS app is your personal cashless parking companion. It houses your virtual A-Card, lets you manage your vehicle(s), top up your balance, find nearby places to park, view your parking history, generate reports, transfer funds between cards, and talk to an AI agent called Proximo. It is more of your parking wallet, always ready whenever you need it.

Step 1: Download the KAPS App

The KAPS app is available on both Android and iOS. Below is a step by step procedure on how to get it on your device:

On Android

1. Open the Google Play Store on your Android phone
2. In the search bar, type “KAPS APP”
3. Tap the KAPS app from the search results
4. Tap Install and wait for the download to complete as shown below
5. Once installed, tap Open

1. Open the App Store on your iPhone
2. In the search bar, type “KAPS APP”
3. Tap the KAPS App from the search results
4. Tap Get and authenticate with your Face ID, Touch ID, or Apple ID password
5. Once installed, tap Open

The KAPS App is free to download on both platforms.

Step 2: Create Your Account or Log In

Once the app is open, you will be greeted with two options:

• Sign Up if this is your first time using KAPS App, tap here to create your account in just a few steps.
• Log In if you already have a KAPS account.

Step 3: KAPS App Main Dashboard

The KAPS App dashboard is straightforward and easy to navigate. Here is a list of what you will find:

At the top of the screen: Your Virtual A-Card balance is displayed so you always know exactly how much you have available for parking.

The four quick action buttons:

• Reports: Generate either a PDF or Excel report by selecting your card and specifying the dates.

• Transfer: Move funds to A-Card holders or between cards.
• Proximo: An intelligent KAPS AI assistant for all your questions.

The Recent Transactions section: Just below the action buttons, your most recent activity is displayed including parking fee deductions and recharge credits so you always know what is happening with your account in real time.

A Refresh button on the right to be used in case your recent transaction does not reflect instantly.

The bottom navigation bar:

• Home: Takes you back to the main dashboard
• Vehicle Management: Manage, register new vehicles, number plates, link them to a card and delete a vehicle.
• Search for Parking Button: The green centre button allows you to search for parking by listing places all nearby places to park. It also lists your recent visits.
• History: A full view of transaction activity.
• Settings: KAPS profile and lists your preferences.

Step 4: Top Up Your KAPS A-Card

Before you can use KAPS to pay for parking, make sure your KAPS A-Card has sufficient balance.

Step 5: Add and Manage Your Vehicles

One of the most useful features of the KAPS app is Vehicle Management button located on the bottom navigation bar. This is where you register the number plate of your car so that KAPS can know it is you when you drive into a parking facility.

How to add your vehicle

1. From the home screen, navigate to Vehicle Management.
2. Tap Add Vehicle.
3. Enter your vehicle’s number plate e.g. KXX 400T, model/make, link to your preferred card, enable Exit 2FA Protection (discussed in detail in step 6).
4. Save.

Your number plate is now linked to your A-Card account. When you pull up to a KAPS enabled parking barrier, the camera reads your plate, checks your account, and if your balance is sufficient, the barrier opens automatically.

Can I add more than one vehicle?

Yes. The KAPS app allows you to register multiple vehicles under a single account. This is especially for families or organisations where more than one vehicle needs to be managed under the same A-Card account. Simply repeat the steps above for each additional vehicle.

Can I remove a vehicle?

Yes. If you change your car or sell one, you can remove a registered vehicle from your account at any time by going to Vehicle Management, selecting the vehicle, and tapping Delete Vehicle.

Step 6: Enable Exit 2FA Protection

This might sound a bit technical but it is actually very simple and important.

What is Exit 2FA Protection?

2FA stands for Two-Factor Authentication.

Simply put, imagine parking your car and knowing with complete confidence that nobody can drive it out without your authorization. That is exactly what Exit 2FA Protection is. It adds an extra layer of protection to your vehicle when parked.

How Exit 2FA Protection Works?

Say, in case an unauthorised person has access to your vehicle, they cannot exit the parking facility because you will receive a push notification on your phone which requires a confirmation each time an exit is attempted.

This ensures that even during parking, your vehicle is safe and no one can illegally exit with it out of a parking facility without your authority.

How to enable Exit 2FA Protection?

Exit 2FA Protection can be enabled in 2 ways:

1. When adding a vehicle for the first time as shown below:

2. Even after a vehicle has been added, just tap on the vehicle and then enable the Exit 2FA Protection.
