Embracing Feelings Again…
Written by Gayathri Shylesh

Growing up, I always had an acute felt sense of what was going on around me. Even though I didn’t understand it very well, I knew that there was some meaning behind what I felt or sensed- some of it came with a sense of “knowing” that I later knew to be as intuition. When I was growing up, there was no guidance or advice on this except the constant exhortation “Let it go”. This was a perplexing answer for a curious sensitive teenager. To deal with the discomfort of what I was feeling, I sought to understand it intellectually and spent a lot of time staying in my head. This felt like a much safer place where things made sense. When you are told often “You are being too sensitive, too emotional etc. you develop a new context on how to live life by relegating your feelings as not important or filing it away. This suppression expressed outwardly in a language of judgment and criticism of self and others. How I really felt, kept getting buried deeper and deeper until my body could no longer handle it. The body expressed its frustration a variety of health issues which then became my guide and teacher for the better part of 40 years on a journey of healing, self-care and self-acceptance.
It took me a long time to acknowledge that emotions and expressing feelings was a necessary part for healthy living and understand how vulnerability is a strength. It certainly had not been a part of my paradigm in my tech career, where you were rewarded for intellect, quick and logical thinking.
I became an avoidance expert, by being self-reliant, and an independent thinker because that is what I perceived as the better way to be. Yet, I couldn’t resolve the longstanding health issues or calm down the circular thoughts I was experiencing. It wasn’t until I embraced the Mind-Body connection, that things started to fall into place. I finally recognized that I wasn’t connecting feelings to an expression in my body. When I came across EmRes, I was taken by its simplicity and how easily anyone could use it. EmRes allowed a safe space to acknowledge my feelings in my body. It gave me language to express what I was sensing and feeling. I was able to engage, respond, address and resolve quickly what I needed to feel, accept and acknowledge instead of avoiding the messages. Over a period of weeks, I noticed shifts in how I responded differently in day-to-day life. I reconnected to myself in a meaningful way, embracing my feelings as an essential part of what it was to have my human experience. This helped me to move into my authenticity. With this, came a sense of awareness, profound presence and compassion for myself and others. By being an observer to my body’s sensations, I could acknowledge, process and resolve my feelings. I could now let go of other’s opinions and judgements and release the burden that came with holding on so tightly. It has taught me how feelings can be a true guide, be in service to you on your path of transformation. I share EmRes with clients, on a daily basis to empower them into harmony. Health and wellbeing is an ongoing journey rich with discovery of what you are capable of — I am grateful that I can embrace my feelings as my own again.
