The Older Man Fantasy Nobody Talks About..
Watching the conversations around Lindani made me question what women are really searching for when they date older men.
The Older Man Fantasy Nobody Talks About..

Maybe women aren’t attracted to older men. Maybe they’re attracted to the certainty they seem to offer.
I don’t think Lindani is the story, I think she’s the mirror.
For the past few days, I’ve watched the internet dissect her relationship from every possible angle. Everyone suddenly became a relationship expert. Some people blamed her. Others defended her. Some said she should have known better, while others insisted that love makes people overlook the obvious.
As I scrolled through all the opinions, I realised something. We weren’t really talking about Lindani anymore. We were talking about ourselves.
We were talking about every young woman who has ever dated an older man. Every woman who said, “I could never,” only to find herself falling for someone fifteen or twenty years older. Every woman who has looked at an older man and thought, “Maybe this is what peace feels like.”
That’s when I stopped asking why Lindani made the choices she did, because the truth is, none of us know what existed inside her relationship. Instead, I started asking a different question.
Why are so many young women drawn to older men in the first place?
I don’t think it’s as simple as people make it seem.
The internet loves reducing women to stereotypes. If a young woman dates an older man, she’s either chasing money, looking for a father figure or trying to secure a soft life. It’s such an easy conclusion to make because it saves us from asking harder questions.
But I don’t think that’s the whole story.
I think many women aren’t necessarily looking for an older man. They’re looking for what he appears to represent.
Think about your twenties for a second. It’s probably one of the most confusing decades of your life. You’re trying to build a career, understand who you are, make better decisions, heal from things you didn’t even realise affected you and somehow still convince yourself that everything is going according to plan.
Then someone walks into your life who seems like they’ve already figured it all out.
He knows what he wants. He has direction. He speaks with confidence. He’s built a career. He doesn’t seem as uncertain as everyone else around you.
Compared to the emotional chaos that often comes with dating in your twenties, he feels like stability.
And stability is attractive.
Not because women are weak, but because uncertainty is exhausting.
I think that’s the part people rarely admit. Sometimes we’re not attracted to age itself. We’re attracted to the feeling of finally being able to rest.
But life has a funny way of teaching us that certainty and emotional maturity are two completely different things.
Someone can know exactly where they’re going professionally and still have no idea how to love another person well.
Someone can be financially secure and emotionally unavailable.
Someone can be fifty years old and still avoid accountability better than a twenty-five-year-old.
Age gives people experience, but experience doesn’t automatically become wisdom. Wisdom only comes when someone is willing to reflect, grow and change.
Watching the conversations around “The Polygamist” reminded me of something I’ve seen happen over and over again.
People kept saying, “Well, he told everyone who he was.”
And maybe he did. But I also understand why so many women believed the story could end differently.
Not because they’re unintelligent, but because women are raised to believe that love transforms people. We’re taught that patience will eventually be rewarded, that loyalty softens hard hearts and that if you love someone deeply enough, they’ll become the version of themselves you’ve been waiting for.
Sometimes that happens. Many times, it doesn’t. Sometimes people aren’t hiding who they are at all. We’re simply hoping they’ll become someone else.
Hope is beautiful, but it has also convinced many intelligent women to negotiate with realities they recognised from the very beginning.
Maybe that’s why this conversation has stayed with me for so long. Not because I think dating an older man is wrong. Not because I think age-gap relationships never work. I’ve seen beautiful relationships where age was nothing more than a number.
I’ve also seen relationships between people the same age that were completely unhealthy. Age was never the deciding factor. Character was.
What Lindani’s story reminded me of is how easy it is to fall in love with what someone represents instead of who they actually are.
Sometimes we’re not choosing the person standing in front of us. We’re choosing the future we imagine they’ll give us. We mistake their confidence for emotional security. We mistake their experience for wisdom. We mistake their certainty for compatibility.
Those aren’t the same things.
So maybe we’ve been asking the wrong question all along.
Instead of asking, “How old is he?” maybe we should be asking, “How does he treat people when they disappoint him? Can he apologise without turning himself into the victim? Does he make room for my voice, or do I constantly find myself becoming quieter just to keep the peace?”
Most importantly, “Can I still recognise myself in this relationship?”. Because I don’t think the right relationship asks you to become smaller in order to make someone else feel bigger.
Maybe that’s the lesson I took from all the conversations around Lindani. The people who are meant for us rarely need to be imagined into becoming better. Their actions make us feel safe enough to believe them exactly as they are.

If this felt like a conversation you’ve been waiting to have, you’re in the right place. I write honest reflections on the messy business of becoming an adult. Follow and subscribe, I’d love to have you here for the next one.
