High-Risk Pregnancy: When Should You Worry?

By Dr. Shuchita Batra, Gynaecologist in Ludhiana

In my daily practice, one of the most common questions I hear is — “Doctor, is my pregnancy high-risk?”

The moment women hear this term, they naturally feel anxious. But the truth is, not every high-risk pregnancy is dangerous. It simply means that the pregnancy needs a little more attention, monitoring, and care.

In Ludhiana, I see many women who get unnecessarily scared when they hear this label. So it’s important to understand what it actually means and when you really need to worry.

What is a high-risk pregnancy?

A pregnancy is called high-risk when certain conditions are present that may affect the mother, the baby, or both.

Some common situations include:

· High blood pressure during pregnancy

· Diabetes (either before pregnancy or developed during pregnancy)

· Thyroid problems

· Previous pregnancy complications

· Twin or multiple pregnancy

· Baby growth being less than expected (IUGR)

When should you worry?

You don’t need to panic with every small symptom, but you should definitely stay alert.

Please consult your doctor if you notice:

· Baby movements feeling less than usual

· Severe headache or blurring of vision

· Sudden swelling of face or hands

· Any bleeding or watery discharge

· Continuous abdominal pain

· Sudden weight gain or difficulty in breathing

These are situations where timely check-up is important. It’s always better to get evaluated and be reassured rather than ignore symptoms.

What can you do to stay safe?

Simple things make a big difference:

· Go for regular antenatal check-ups

· Keep a daily watch on baby movements

· Take medications exactly as advised

· Don’t skip recommended tests

· Maintain good hydration and a balanced diet

A reassurance I always give my patients

One thing I always tell my patients — being labeled “high-risk” does not mean something bad will happen.

In fact, with proper monitoring and timely care, most high-risk pregnancies result in completely healthy mothers and healthy babies.

📍 When should you consult?

If you’ve been told your pregnancy is high-risk, or if you notice any of the symptoms mentioned above, stay in regular touch with your gynecologist.

If you are in Ludhiana, make sure you are consulting someone who can monitor your pregnancy closely and guide you step by step through the journey.
