Point-and-shoot (easy), photographing (hard)

While it is true that great artists make the work seem natural or easy and artless, that normally comes with a lot of knowledge, skill, and experiences that have been applied to widely ranging projects in the past and ones contemplated in the future. So this set of examples from amateur, enthusiast, and professional photographers may seem like souvenir snapshots of a nice holiday, more likely these are not lucky shots from a train window. Instead, some will be the culmination of considerable planning (the season, the weather, the time of day and conditions of lighting desired, the viewpoint or standpoint to try in composition, and so forth). In a few cases there is the added complication of simply getting there, too. At the other extreme, akin to serendipity when “the Gods are favoring you,” a person may happen to be at a location just when the light turns the scene bigger than life and the person has some way of recording a photo just then. Most of these pictures, though, are probably somewhere between the “lifetime project” and the “lucky shot.” In other words, when browsing the stream of uploads that grows during the day and over the weeks, it is worth remembering the time and money and effort and experience that is baked into the image that is presented — very often edited, but sometimes straight from the camera “as is.”

Collectively, then, this small set from the 779,900 pictures in the “Landscape” user group represents a lot of time and money and talent and learning curves leading up the the click of the button to record the picture. What seems easy while scrolling through dozens and hundreds of images actually is not easy. Pushing the button takes a fraction of a second, but there is a lot that happens before the composition becomes a moment frozen in time and the scene is represented by means of “writing with light” (photo + graphy). Browsing an exhibition of pictures in person, or paging through online small versions is almost effortless. And the moment of releasing the camera’s shutter is almost effortless. But everything else to make possible such a thing as “writing with light” and then bringing viewers’ momentary attention into focus with the photograph is not easy in the aggregate.

It is worth remembering the many infrastructures, technologies, methods and training, budgeting of time and money, required to produce the ever expanding pool of pictures in the Flickr user group, “Landscape.” It is a marvel, a wonder, and a delight —both in the viewing and in the pursuit of remarkable light and the decisive moments when the geometry comes in the alignment and an emerging idea comes into focus. Judging from the number of people walking around with cameras and eyes peeled for things they notice and potential subjects presenting themselves moment by moment, taking pictures — no matter the investment required — is something that great numbers of people find meaning in. Long may it be so.
